Position: Housing & CAN Community Organizer

Salary: $55,000

Basic Function:

The Community Organizer will lead CIDNY’s advocacy efforts to mobilize people with disabilities who require access to housing services. They will identify, reach out to, and maintain communication with individuals and organizations interested in working systemically to improve access to housing services for people with disabilities living throughout the five boroughs. In addition, this employee will be responsible for planning, organizing, and monitoring the CIDNY Action Network (CAN) monthly meetings.

Specific Duties:

  • Plan and implement an outreach campaign to identify housing needs for people with disabilities in conjunction with the Director of Advocacy and Health Policy.
  • Participate in coalition meetings that advocate for the rights of people with disabilities, specifically addressing barriers to housing needs.
  • Develop a bank of volunteers and advocates to work with CIDNY’s community organizers on these initiatives.
  • Plan, organize, and conduct the CIDNY Action Network (CAN) meetings with the Director of Advocacy and Health Policy.
  • Attend lobbying events throughout the state that address legislation for people with disabilities-related housing needs.
  • Develop and attend community events to promote the need for people with disabilities to access housing services.
  • Develop a referral list of organizations and agencies that advocates for people with disabilities regarding housing needs.
  • Educate people with disabilities about their rights to housing services.
  • Help these consumers acknowledge their rights to access these services and assist in the preparation of testimony denoting the need for access to housing services.
  • Work with Directors of Advocacy and Communications to develop/improve promotional material and recruitment tools.
  • Work with CIDNY’s Director of Consumer Services to facilitate referrals for housing services.

Discuss the process of receiving housing services for people with disabilities.

Know, fully understand, and be able to articulate the legislation that provides access to housing services for people with disabilities.

  • Distribute educational materials to community-based groups and providers directly and through websites and social media.
  • Document all program activities in CIDNY's database accurately and promptly.
  • Perform other program-related duties as assigned.

Education and Training:

BA or BS Degree with at least three (3) years of proven experience in recruiting, training, motivating, and developing volunteer activists.

Experience:

  • Demonstrated commitment to civil rights, including disability rights.
  • Experienced in planning, organizing, and implementing grassroots advocacy campaigns, including effective outreach, recruitment, and mobilization techniques and strategies.
  • Experience utilizing e-advocacy and web-based tools and communications.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills, including experience in preparing and delivering public presentations.
  • Ability to work independently and cooperatively with staff, volunteers, and consumers in a culturally diverse environment. Proficiency in another language other than English (including ASL) is a plus.
  • Team player with effective interpersonal skills, such as leadership and team building.
  • Ability to design a work plan, prioritize and meet goals.
  • Familiarity or experience with issues that impact the lives of people with disabilities.
  • Experience with database systems is highly desirable. Knowledge of Word, Goldmine, Access and Excel programs is also desirable.
  • Bilingual, preferred.

Travel demands:

The employee must report to the Manhattan office for this position. Requires traveling for presentations, protest/lobbying events, etc.

Working Environment:

The Community Organizer will spend some of their work time in CIDNY'S, NY office. The work area is shared, and the workspace is divided into cubicles. Verbal communication can be heard from other staff in adjoining cubicles. Must wear a mask at all times.
