The Project: Hanford Waste Treatment and Immobilization Plant (WTP)

The Bechtel team is responsible for the design, construction, and commissioning of the world’s largest and most technically sophisticated radioactive waste treatment plant (WTP) at the U.S. Department of Energy Hanford Site in Washington State. This first-of-a-kind project will use vitrification to transform 53 million gallons of radioactive and chemical waste into an immobile glass form. The waste is stored in 177 aging underground tanks accumulated between 1944 and 1989, when plutonium and other nuclear materials were produced for national defense. The plant will include three major nuclear process facilities and a laboratory: a Pretreatment Facility, a High-Level Waste Vitrification Facility, a Low-Activity Waste Vitrification Facility, and an Analytical Laboratory.

WTP Project Mechanical Systems EGS Scope

You will be working as part of the Mechanical Systems team designing the fluid and gas systems in the WTP process facilities. You will assist the Mechanical Systems Engineering Group Supervisor in managing discipline work process execution and assuring technical adequacy in accordance with company, contract, and industry codes and standard. You will be preparing technical reports and studies and design documentation, performing calculations using

engineering software, and preparing specifications for complex mechanical equipment for the waste treatment process and supporting systems. The ideal candidate will have solid experience in process system design and will be capable of developing design documents, including piping and instrument diagrams and equipment data sheets, that incorporate the applicable design requirements, including nuclear safety requirements. You will be interfacing and coordinating with other engineering disciplines and the client in the development of the design.

Mechanical Systems EGS Scope Job Details

The primary role of the Mechanical Systems Deputy EGS is to identify the process, nuclear safety, and other

requirements for the fluid process and support systems and design the system and specify the equipment to meet the applicable requirements. This involves supervising other mechanical engineers. The Mechanical Systems Deputy EGS coordinates within the engineering group and other disciplines and groups in developing the detailed system design and equipment selection in a team environment. The Mechanical Systems Deputy EGS resolves technical issues related to the discipline, including any required interface with other disciplines, groups, suppliers, and the customer. The senior mechanical engineer prepares reports and studies in resolving open technical issues related to the process systems. You will develop and revise piping and instrument diagrams, formal calculations, and equipment datasheets and specifications in completing the detailed design for the system, including equipment selection. The Mechanical Systems Deputy EGS supports the associated safety analyses and hazards evaluations. The Mechanical Systems Deputy EGS supports development of the system cost estimate and schedule. The Mechanical Systems Deputy EGS assures the work is performed to the high quality standards for nuclear facilities while executing to the schedule. In addition, it will be required that the candidate have excellent communication skills (both verbal and written), can be the “face” of Bechtel, promoting our leadership, quality, and safety values, to external partners including vendors, construction companies, and other subcontractors.

Basic Qualifications

• Level I -BS degree in Mechanical Engineering or Chemical Engineering from an accredited university or college with 9 years of progressive related experience. Related experience includes, but is not limited to, experience in Piping and Instrument Diagram (P&ID) development fluid system design, hydraulic, heat transfer, and thermodynamic calculations, and equipment specification and design development for waste processing, nuclear, refinery, power, or chemical process facilities.
• Level II -BS degree in Mechanical Engineering or Chemical Engineering from an accredited university or college with 13 years of progressive related experience. Related experience includes, but is not limited to, experience in Piping and Instrument Diagram (P&ID) development fluid system design, hydraulic, heat transfer, and thermodynamic calculations, and equipment specification and design development for waste processing, nuclear, refinery, power, or chemical process facilities.
• Must be able to work and remain in the US without visa sponsorship. Must be able to complete a pre-employment drug screen, physical (if located at the construction site), and background check.
• Experience in working with procedures meeting quality assurance programs such as ASME-NQA-1, MIL-Q-9858A, or ISO-9000.

Minimum Qualifications

• Must be able to complete a pre-employment drug screen and background check.
• Knowledge of industry and regulatory guides, codes, and standards.

Preferred Qualifications

• Professional registration in Mechanical or Chemical Engineering
• Experience in fluid system design in a DOE or commercial nuclear facilities.
• Possess the legal right to work and remain in the US without sponsorship
• Knowledge of Bechtel Corporate guides and standards.
