MEMBER POSITION TITLE: Health, Nutrition and Wellness Program Assistant

HOST SITE: UW Oshkosh Head Start has 7 locations in Oshkosh, Neenah, Menasha, Appleton and Seymour where the member would be working with staff and students. Their main office will be in Oshkosh or Appleton.

OVERVIEW: UW Oshkosh is searching for an AmeriCorps member to join their team to support the health, nutrition and wellness goals of the program. Head Start provides a comprehensive education program for children ages 3-5 years and their families. The member would enhance the delivery of education to the children and families through small group lessons and offering individualized support and information to staff and families. DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Coordinate and implement community events and staff training promoting health education (increase water intake, screen time recommendations, bedtime routines, breastfeeding, smoking cessation, etc.)
  • Review Nutrition Assessments completed by families and provide individualized resources to assist them in their health and wellness goals.
  • Input and monitor health, nutrition and wellness data into the children’s electronic file using the Child Plus system.
  • Submit articles for the monthly UWO HS program newsletter and Facebook page, focusing on health, nutrition and wellness for low-income families.
  • Actively participate in community wide committee work focused on health, nutrition and wellness on behalf of UWO Head Start.
  • Support a safe, healthy environment for staff, students and families by promoting Emergency Preparedness Plans at each site.
  • Collaborate with Family Resource Specialists to include health, nutrition and physical activity resources during family events.
  • Community outreach around health and wellness topics and objectives
  • Deliver community-based programing around health and wellness topics and objectives

QUALIFICATIONS/SKILLS/EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:

  • Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in: Community Health, Health and Wellness Promotion, Nutrition/Health Sciences or related background and experience.
  • Passion for health, nutrition and wellness initiatives
  • Knowledge of the Child and Adult Care Food Program (CACFP)
  • Knowledge of the State of Wisconsin Child Care Licensing Regulations
  • Ability to self-manage projects and time
  • Ability to communicate effectively with supervisor, co-workers, and other staff
  • Ability to meet Staff Health Exam qualifications
  • Be 18 years or older at the beginning of their service
  • Hold a high school diploma or equivalent
  • U.S Citizen, U.S National, or Lawful permanent resident alien of the U.S

OTHER INFORMATION:

  • Member Term of Service: The Member’s service term will start on 1/3/2023 and end on 8/31/2023.There’s flexibility with the start date, but the position must start by or before 1/16/2023
  • Time Requirements: The member is expected to serve 900 hours, which averages to 26-32 hours/week during the service term period.
  • Members will receive a gross living allowance while serving, which is paid on the 15th and last day of each month. The gross living allowance amount will be $661.75 per pay period. Please note, there will not be an additional hourly wage or salary.
  • Segal Education Award upon successful completion of hourly requirement described in Time Requirements: The Education Award amount for this position is $3,247.50
  • Forbearance on qualified student loans while serving and interest accrual payments.
  • Experience and resume builder- receiving hands-on experience in the field by working with children and families, focusing on improving health and nutrition outcomes in an educational setting.
  • Networking- opportunities to build a network of professional contacts at UW Oshkosh and in the surrounding communities.
  • Mileage to and from your assigned office site will be reimbursed at the standard state of Wisconsin rate.
