Public Grounds is responsible for the design, planning, planting, and management of vegetation along city right-of-ways, facility grounds and beautification projects within Springfield. Our primary goal is to effectively manage these areas of responsibility to provide a safe environment and a higher quality of life for our residents and visitors.

Experience, Education, and Training

• Requires at least three years experience in performing general maintenance of commercial landscape grounds or parks with the operation of medium-duty equipment such as mowers, tractor/front-end loaders, etc.;

• Depending on assignment, requires at least three years experience operating backhoes or boom mowers, performing integrated pest management operations or installation and servicing of landscape automatic irrigation systems.

• Experience in directing/leading the work of others.

• Must take and pass, at minimum, the written portion of the Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) exam (permit) within 90 days of hire.
• Must obtain and maintain the following within the probationary period:

  • AED, CPR and First Aid certifications;
  • Valid state Certified Public Operator's pesticide application license in Right-of-way and/or Ornamental & Turf Category;
  • A class “A” or “B” CDL, classification depends on assignment.
• Depending on assignment, must obtain and maintain the following within the probationary period:
  • Valid International Society of Arboriculture Certified Arborist certification.
