Reports to: Supervisory Sr. Field Geologist/Permanent Geotechnicians

Department: Geology/Exploration

Work Schedule: 14 days on/7 days off

General Accountability

Reporting to the permanent Geotechnicians and ultimately to the Senior Supervisory Core Logging Geologist, the temporary Core Processing Technician also works at the direction of the Exploration Core Logging Geologists.

Nature and Scope of Position

Preparation of and transportation of drill core for geologists. Includes washing, labeling, photographing of drill core, and accurately recording recovered lengths of core and legible transcribing measurements on core log sheets and entering into the computer. Job also includes sampling cores designated by geologists and recording data using tablets and computers. Incumbents may also be asked to provide assistance for fieldwork which may involve some hiking and checking on drill rigs which may require the use of helicopter.

Specific Accountabilities

  • Transportation of core to and from the Core Processing Facility. Must have valid driver’s license
  • Moving pallets of core using a hand truck or pallet jack
  • Move boxes of core from pallets to tables
  • Wash, process, and photograph core boxes

· Cutting core using an automated core cutting machine

  • Recorded recovery data of rock utilizing IPad and desktop computer
  • Sampling of drill core by following procedures outlined by geologists
  • Upload photographs into the computer system, label and store according to procedure
  • Track drilling and sample data using Excel spreadsheet
  • General maintenance and daily housekeeping as directed
  • Must be able to operate safely in wilderness environment
  • Transportation by helicopter may be required

Unusual Working Conditions:

May be required to work short periods of time in extreme heat and/or cold, outside, in austere Alaskan environment with wildlife in the area (bears, wolves, and moose). Core logging area of Core Processing Facility maybe noisy at times. This is a site-based position with a permanent camp and facilities. An extended 2 week on 1 week off rotational work schedule is required, working 11 hour 11-hour The Core Processing Facility and adjacent dormitory housing unit is at a distal section of the mine lease and cooperation between personnel is critical to the work/social environment.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education: High School diploma

Certificates, Licenses and Registrations: Valid driver’s license is required. MSHA certificate required but will provide class to obtain MSHA certification

Experience:

Experience with heavy equipment is a plus but will train if necessary.

Experience in use of computers is a must

Remote site or rotational work schedule experience desired

Skilled trade experience preferred

Skills: Must be proficient in MS Office, specifically Excel and accurately collect measurements of core

Abilities: Ability to work efficiently with minimal supervision in confined spaces and tight corridors and outdoors in the Alaskan wilderness. Must be able to lift 25 lbs repetitiously safely. Ability to work in a team with a high regard for quality and environmental concerns and a strong commitment to safe production. Must be comfortable working around helicopters. Individuals must be able to take direction from geologists and execute tasks to a standard with little supervision

Knowledge: Working knowledge of general geology is an advantage

Job Types: Full-time, Temporary

Pay: $19.80 per hour
