POSITION SUMMARY:
The Operations Research (OR) group within the Refining organization enhances and supports the planning, optimization, simulation, and scheduling software applications used by the refineries and other groups within the Company - not only to run the day-to-day business, but also to develop the Company's long-term asset investment strategy.
This successful candidate is responsible for developing and supporting both tools and work processes to optimize gasoline blending in addition to driving best practices and continuous improvement. The primary focus is the integrated blending optimization and scheduling platforms used at the refineries but can also include secondary distribution networks such terminals outside of the refinery fence line. Opportunities will also exist for consulting with other business units within MPC to aid in the development of optimized solutions to drive profitability.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Builds, maintains, and enhances tools for blending optimization and scheduling. Collaborates with refinery and other teams on updates and changes to the tools.
- Strategizes new approaches and improvements to blending and scheduling tools across refinery locations and leads these projects from definition through full implementation.
- Interfaces with IT organization on development or enhancement of supporting tools.
- Builds, maintains, and uses reports and interfaces to lead to continuous improvement of tools.
- Also develops and supports tools for reconciling, biasing and auditing the blending and scheduling solutions against actual performance.
- Consults with other MPC organizations when modeling and/or optimization support and expertise is needed.
- Provides technical support, consulting, and training to refinery (and other) personnel and helps to improve the planning, scheduling, and optimization work flow.
- Interfaces with software supplier on recommended enhancements and bug/fix items.
- Travel requirement approximately 15%
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
- Bachelor’s Degree required, Chemical Engineering or Chemistry (or related) degrees preferred.
- Gasoline blending experience required.
- Expertise in blend planning, blend “auditing”, and blend quality prediction biasing.
- Strong understanding of blend specifications, CARB and AZRBOB a plus. General understanding of specification test methods.
- Experience with analytical techniques for statistical property correlation development.
- Understanding of blend planning, through execution and certification process and related best practices.
- General knowledge of refinery flow and process unit functions and impacts on product blending and quality.
- Demonstrated ability to work with minimal supervision, drive continuous improvement and have a results-oriented focus.
TECHNICAL SKILLS:
- Expertise with AspenTech MBO strongly preferred.
- Experience with APS (ORION) and PIMS software is a plus.
- Strong Excel skills and some VBA programming experience.
- Experience with SQL, SSMS (SQL Server Management Studio), scripting queries, etc. preferred.
- Experience with Honeywell online controls system, analyzers (i.e. NIR) and certification test methods a plus.
- Experience with Tableau and/or Power BI, SeeQ, MATLAB, PI data visualization and/or analytics tools a plus.
- Strong computer proficiency including Microsoft Office products, and ability to successfully use additional refining-specific software applications.
