Job Summary
The Forest Lands and Stumpage Manager leads the forest management team with responsibility for profit/loss, forest land management activities, stumpage procurement, safety, and forestry operations.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS & DUTIES*
Management

  • Role model of a safe and productive working environment
  • Assist Senior Management for long term growth and margin expansion strategy of the business unit
  • Annual P&L responsibility for company fee land management and stumpage/procurement impact to Forestry and NH combined operating targets; to include development of and performance tracking to operating plan, operating goals and objectives; monitor and manage to key metrics and quickly identify and initiate corrective actions as required.
  • Deliver cost savings improvements through process improvement activities including operating cycle time.
  • Develop relationships across the business that help create a culture of continuous improvement and actively participate in activities that will ensure sustainability of improvement initiatives
  • Mentor, coach, and train employees on Operational Excellence standards, tools, and metrics
  • Execute the implementation of capital investments and improvement projects.
  • Operations*
  • Responsible for E&HS compliance across company forest management and stumpage procurement operations; develop and promote safety standards.
  • Compliance with applicable BMP’s, environmental standards, MIOSHA, and all relevant laws and regulations.
  • Plan, organize, and direct operations to meet and improve upon, annual operating targets
  • Oversee Forest Management activities on company fee lands and applicable stumpage sales:
  • Alignment with Forest Management Plan and forest certification
  • Quality and consistency across operations
  • Stumpage sale procurement, strategy, and profitability
  • Pre-harvest activities in alignment with due diligence, includes logging road construction activities
  • Status and closure of harvest areas, updates for GIS data, maps, continual forest inventory & other systems
  • Supervise forester management staff and daily operations to meet or exceed company production economic targets.
  • Sustain a value mind-set amongst foresters, drive continual improvement in advance planning and operations monitoring skills, continually improve business and financial understanding, foster an attitude of commitment to Longyear business success
  • Maintain alignment with Company raw material plans and with Production and Logistics Manager on Harvesting and Transportation to facilitate smooth transfer of operations to harvest and delivery team
  • Provide backup support to Production and Logistics Manager

Lands Administration

  • Assist with lands administration duties as assigned

General

  • Effective interaction with harvest and delivery teams, office and yard staff, management, GIS and accounting teams
  • Execution and compliance of relevant contracts: stumpage, logging, hauling, road construction

WORK SCHEDULE
Hours: full-time; 40 hours per week; can be substantially more; irregular hours with early start time; travel & overnight stays out of town
Overtime: Exempt Status: without compensation and without notice
SUPERVISION
Reporting Staff: Forest Management Foresters
RECOMMENDED EXPERIENCE

  • 15+ years’ experience in land base management, purchase and operation of standing timber; manufacturing of forest products, supervision of contractors, scaling, grading of product.
  • 10+ years’ experience in employee oversight, economic analysis and monitoring of financial performance.
