Summary:

Goldbelt C6, LLC., is seeking a Food Chemist with a Specialty in Toxic Metals and their transfer and presence in infant foods. This role will focus on arsenic as a poisonous substance that is known to cause cancer and neurodevelopment effects in infants and children. Long-term dietary exposure to arsenic and other toxic elements (lead, cadmium, etc.), poses a health risk to infants and children.

Essential Job Functions:

• Shall conduct a literature search and write a review/perspective paper on the impact of processing on toxic metal content of food.
• Shall design and conduct laboratory experiments to evaluate the effects of filtering and other processing treatments on toxic metal content of juices and other beverages.
• Shall conduct experiments that aid in the evaluation of process methods such as milling on chemical contaminants in grain used for infant foods such as rice, barley, and/or wheat.
• Conduct a literature search and write a perspective/review paper on the impact of processing on toxic metal content of foods and beverages.
• Participate in a research project entitled “Impact of Processing on Toxic Elements and Chemical Contaminants in Infant Foods and Beverages”.
• Design and/or assist with lab-scale and pilot-scale experiments that evaluate toxic metal and other chemical contaminant transfer/formation/removal to/from beverages and other foods.
• Design and perform laboratory analyses for toxic metals and chemical contaminants in beverages and food products using established analytical methods.
• Analyze and interpret research data to evaluate laboratory performance.
• Perform and interpret statistical analyses of data generated from lab experiments.
• Prepare manuscripts for publication in peer-reviewed scientific journals, posters for presentation at scientific conferences, and application notes.

Necessary Skills and Knowledge:

• Knowledge of filter aids used in the food industry for the clarification of beverages, as it’s necessary to evaluate the transfer of arsenic and other heavy metals from filter aids into juices, particularly those consumed by infants and children.
• Knowledge of identifying the types of filter aids used by the U. S. beverage industry, to investigate arsenic and other heavy metals introduced into clarified beverages (juice), by the filter aid of interest.
• Must be able to determine key factors contributing to elevated levels of arsenic and other heavy metals in beverages.
• Must be able to investigate the effectiveness of chelating and washing treatments for removing heavy metals from filtering aids and preventing transfer of heavy metals to beverages.
• Knowledge of evaluating filtration treatments that do not involve the use of filtering aids and other treatments that may be used to reduce toxic metal content of beverages.
• Knowledge of investigating other processing methods and their potential impact on toxic metals and other chemical contaminants in infant foods such as those made from cereal grains such as rice, wheat, or barley.

Minimum Qualifications:

• Master’s degree or Ph.D. in Food Sciences, Food Chemistry, Analytical Chemistry, or related field.
• Previous experience with elemental analysis and running pilot plant.
• Previous experience with lab-scale processing equipment.
• Must have at least one (1) year of relevant laboratory experience.

• Ph.D. in Food Sciences, Food Chemistry, Analytical Chemistry, or related field.
