This position will work with the District fisheries and wildlife program. It is an excellent opportunity to gain hands on experience in the day to day tasks that occupy a biologist. Work will include such activities as environmental education and public outreach with both children and adults, data entry, field data collection, and report writing. Field work may include; bird surveys, various environmental monitoring projects, and fisheries monitoring and habitat restoration. The applicant needs to be comfortable working in brown bear country, and in inclement weather (cold and rain).
The Yakutat Ranger District is the most remote Ranger District in the National Forest System. Accessible only by plane or boat, it is set in a rugged landscape of glaciers, old growth forests, and wild rivers, populated with moose, mountain goats, deer, 200 species of birds, and bears. The area hosts some of healthiest and most diverse stocks of wild pacific salmon and trout in the world. About 600 people reside in the community of Yakutat which has all the basic services, but lacks many amenities. Outdoor recreational opportunities are superb and include fishing, sea kayaking, canoeing, camping, surfing, birding, hiking, and wildlife viewing.

Compensation amounts:
- $1,500 - RT travel allowance to work site and back
- $300 - weekly living allowance
- $200 - PPE gear/boot stipend
- $920 - duty related travel
- AmeriCorps eligibility (Education award of $2,474.27)
- Housing provided
- All allowances are subject to applicable federal, state, and local taxes
