Position Description:

Mathematica applies expertise at the intersection of data, methods, policy, and practice to improve well-being around the world. We collaborate closely with public-and private-sector partners to translate big questions into deep insights that improve programs, refine strategies, and enhance understanding using data science and analytics. Our work yields actionable information to guide decisions in wide-ranging policy areas, from health, education, early childhood, and family support to nutrition, employment, disability, and international development.

We are currently recruiting field interviewers across the country to work on the Study on Nutrition and Activity in Child Care Settings-II (SNACS-II), sponsored by the Food and Nutrition Service of the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) between January-May of 2023. The study will assess the Child and Adult Care Food Program (CACFP) as well as the infants, children, and teens it serves. Study information will be collected through both hardcopy and in-person surveys, observations of childcare environments and the meals and snacks consumed by children. Data collection will take place at up to 1,340 childcare providers in 25 states.

Field staff will work with a team of survey professionals to conduct or support in-person data collection, and may assume the following roles:

  • Conduct environmental observations
  • Conduct observations of CACFP meals and snacks (foods offered, consumed, and wasted; foods brought from home; table/classroom waste)
  • Measure children’s heights and weights
  • Conduct cost interviews with non-FDCH (Family Day Care Homes) providers and sponsors
  • Administer Teen Survey in ARs and OSHCCs (Outside School Hours Care Centers)
  • Train provider staff on completing Infant Intake Forms
  • Collect accurate financial information surrounding the food services provided by centers

Mathematica Offers:

  • Competitive rates depending upon experience and the assignment
  • Flexible day, evening, and weekend hours, depending upon the project
  • Paid training

Position Requirements:

  • Experience working in schools/childcare centers
  • Observation experience a plus

  • Must be able to travel up to 4 or 5 days a week
  • Possess a valid Driver’s License and/or have access to reliable transportation
  • Willingness to undergo a low-level security clearance and background check

Various federal agencies with whom we contract require that staff successfully undergo a background investigation or security clearance as a condition of working on the project. If you are assigned to such a project, you will be required to obtain the requisite security clearance.

All Mathematica field staff must be in accordance with Executive Order 14042 and its implementing guidelines. These include, among others, providing proof of COVID-19 vaccination and wearing face coverings and other personal protective equipment as required.
