THIS IS A REGULAR FULL-TIME NON-EXEMPT POSITION

JOB SUMMARY: The Family Support Specialist / Outreach Specialist ensures a safe, comfortable environment for child survivors and non-abusing parent fleeing domestic violence. This position provides safety planning, services and support to youth survivors and their non-abusing parent, during their time they are receiving services with the Family Violence Prevention Program.

This position is responsible for supporting family navigation services and will interact directly with families to answer complex and sensitive questions, provide information and referral to family members and professionals, conduct interviews and screening, and provide consultation and technical assistance to staff at community-based agencies.

The Outreach Specialist will provide education and outreach support for families, children and youth, educators, health care providers and organizations serving families in within the service area. The individual in this position will contribute to developing and disseminating culturally and linguistically appropriate information to groups and stakeholders and conduct training and organization of events.

This ideal candidate will have the passion and vision for serving families who are experiencing crisis. The candidate will be able to provide non-bias, strength-based approaches to supporting the family with supervised visitation, parenting skills, and case management.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Assists with providing evidence-based concepts, principles, procedures and practices for survivors of domestic and sexual violence and their children.

2. Assists in developing methods, approaches, and procedures to meet program requirements and children's needs.

3. Assists with responsible for crisis intervention, assessment, and service implementation for children.

4. Provides advocacy, safety planning, and case management services for children and their parents (if needed).

5. Assists with conducting intake with parents and provides educational material to parents regarding the program.

6. Coordinates appropriate services for clients with Family Violence Prevention Staff and/or Advocates.

7. Coordinates with the other departmental staff regarding services provided, group activities, and curriculum development.

8. Assists with referring individuals (children and adolescents) to appropriate community resources for additional assistance and counseling.

9. Spends time with children (on an individual basis if possible) in an effort to support the development of establishing trust and building positive adult/child relationship skills.

10. Conducts and assists with classes/intervention groups and other children’s programming groups for children.

11. Assists with facilitating a parenting group for the non-abusing parents with children to educate parents on the effects of witnessing domestic violence as a child.

12. Delivers and assists with planning outreach program activities, strengthens partnerships, ensures adherence to policy, and assists with program administration to promote stable and productive relationships between the university and local community. Strives to expand and ensure access to programs, facilities, and educational services to diverse audiences. May assist with tracking and managing the outreach program budget.

13. Identifies, promotes, and maintains external partnerships to support the outreach program

15. Researches, develops, and facilitates outreach program content and materials

16. Develops and evaluates curriculum and programs and provides recommendations for improvement.

17. Supervises court ordered supervised visitations and provide observation for supervised visits, complete observation and parental assessment forms, provide parental feedback, and conduct intake interviews.

18. Follows state and federal laws on victim confidentiality.

19. Must be able to work within a team atmosphere and bring compassion to work.

KNOWLEDGE:

Possess awareness of the unique issues relating to family/domestic violence and/or sexual assault in a Native American community. Understand victim issues, rights, and services. Understand legal issues regarding domestic violence and sexual assault. The successful candidate must possess adequate working knowledge of computers, word processing, and desktop publishing. Have a working understanding of the rules and ethics of maintaining confidentiality.

QUALIFICATIONS:

1. Minimum of high school diploma, HSED or GED required.

2. Experience in direct social service with knowledge in sexual violence, domestic violence, women's issues, human and child development, and working with families in crisis, preferred.

3. A minimum of one-year experience in direct social service with knowledge in sexual violence, domestic violence, women's issues, human and child development, and working with families in crisis, preferred.

4. Must pass a background investigation check (BCI).

5. Must have a valid driver’s license, vehicle and appropriate vehicle coverage and maintain driver’s eligibility as a condition of employment. Be eligible to be put on the tribe’s vehicle insurance policy.

SUPERVISORY AUTHORITY:NONE

PERSONAL CONTACTS: Considerable daily contact will be made with the general public, tribal leadership, Program Directors and staff, consultant(s), and the Tribal Community.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Must be able to lift at least 25 pounds. There will be some bending, stooping, lifting, carrying, and reaching in overhead storage or shelving, but mostly sedentary work.

WORK ENVIRONMENT: All Tribal Buildings are smoke free.

TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS: The ability to travel and attend meetings and trainings; overnight and out of town, both locally & nationally.
