Reporting to the Associate Vice President of Finance and HR, while working closely with the CFO. The Executive Director of Accounting and Treasury is responsible for the accounting function and reporting for the institution. In addition, the Executive Director of Accounting and Treasury also executes the functions of cash and financial forecasting, operating cash investments, liquidity, cash inflows and outflows, banking and financial institutions relationships, and financial risk management related to the University’s financial activities.

Specific Duties
  • Management of accounting function in the general ledger, and related subledgers
  • Financial statement preparation and analysis for including but not limited to the Board of Trustees, Senior Management, Creditors, Rating Agencies.
  • Preparation of annual audit workpapers
  • Management of the annual audit and work with outside auditors
  • Work with University tax accountants to prepare the University’s annual 990 and 590 tax reports
  • Oversight of the following portfolios: endowment ($140M), operating cash ($100M), annuities and trusts ($2.8M), and student loan funds ($3M). Ensure that the University complies with the Investment Policy, Operating Cash Policy, and other financial polices and procedures as it pertains to investments. Develop strategies to maximize efficiencies, yields, safeguard assets and cost control.
  • Overview and maintenance of all bank and investment accounts and the relationship with the various financial institutions, and investment managers. Administer Wells Fargo Bank CEO Portal, which requires set-up of all employee and student users, who require banking information, reports, or PCard access (approx. 150 users), program access, limits, and general University settings.
  • Advise Management on the liquidity aspects of long and short-term financial planning. Monitor bank fees, and identify opportunities for savings.
  • Manage and execute functions related to cash liquidity, bank, trustee, brokerage management, investment management. Work with University’s endowment management consultants in administering investments decisions approved by the Board Investment Committee. Develop financial models for investments, cash flow projections (sources and uses of cash), and other financial/treasury-related reports as needed for financial decisions and positions. Forecast cash flow positions, related borrowing needs, and available funds for investments. Ensure sufficient funds are available to meet ongoing operational and capital investment cash liquidity needs.
  • Oversee the completion of various annual financial reports and surveys
  • Assist in financial internal control development, implementation, and assessment.
  • Work with and train operational units with Federal and State legislative compliance.
  • Manage direct reports of all staff accountants
  • Additional tasks as assigned by the Associate Vice President of Finance and HR, and the CFO.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited institution
  • 5 years of non-profit accounting experience
  • 5 year of experience with progressive responsibility in treasury, finance or related field
  • 2 years of exposure to and familiarity with investments and endowments
  • 4 years of supervisory experience
  • Knowledge of financial and treasury principles expected
  • Strong understanding of all aspects of Non-profit Accounting through Financial Statement preparation.
  • Experience in preparation of data for the Federal form 990
  • Ability to exercise a high degree of accurate and independent judgement, tact, and discretion.
  • Strong analytical skills in evaluating situations and making decisions. Organized
  • Demonstrated commitment to providing excellent customer service and the ability to work with a broad constituency and develop effective working relations with University administrators, faculty, staff, students, and Trustees.
  • Working knowledge of pooled endowments, including unitization, spending policies, asset allocations, funding transfers, and endowment financial reporting requirements.

Preferred Qualifications
  • CPA, CTP or CFA certifications desirable
  • 3 years of Higher Education experience in accounting, treasury, finance or related role
  • Advanced skill and knowledge of Microsoft Office software, especially Excel, and adept at using macros, V-lookup, creating charts and graphs.
