Description of Work Unit
Founded in 1870, Colorado State University is among the nation’s leading research universities and enrolls approximately 32,000 undergraduate, graduate, and professional students. The Division of University Marketing and Communications (MarComm) oversees Marketing and Brand Management, News and Media Relations, and University Web Management. MarComm provides central marketing, media and community relations, design, photography, web, and digital social media to build a strong, compelling and effective brand position for the entire university and its units.

Position Summary
Colorado State University seeks a passionate and innovative creative leader to serve as its next Executive Creative Director. Leading a team of strong creative talent, the ideal Executive Creative Director will bring a mix of marketing expertise and business understanding to effectively position and promote our university, colleges and units. We’re looking for an experienced manager of people. Someone who can inspire and support others, and in doing so, take our creative efforts to a new level.

The Executive Creative Director is responsible for helping translate Colorado State’s marketing objectives into creative strategies and visual designs, and for fostering the kind of environment that encourages innovation. This leadership role includes assigning teams, inspiring those teams to consistently produce exceptional concepts and final work, and working closely with clients to ensure our campus partners are satisfied with the overall quality of creative work and the value of the services provided. The Executive Creative Director will advance design methodologies and frameworks that will help to structure design approaches and allow for innovation. This position reports directly to the Associate Vice President for Marketing within the Division of University Marketing and Communications.

Required Job Qualifications
  • A bachelor’s degree or higher in graphic design, art, communications, business, marketing or related field.
  • Minimum of ten years of industry experience in design, marketing or brand management.
  • Minimum of five years of supervisory experience.
  • Demonstrated experience and expertise in conceptual and visual design.
  • Demonstrated experience leading strategic and creative outcomes within complex organizations, institutions and/or brands.

Preferred Job Qualifications
  • Advanced knowledge of marketing and advertising principles and a demonstrated track record of fostering creativity across media platforms to achieve targeted goals.
  • Expertise designing for integrated campaigns both traditional and digital including what is leveraged most often, print, web and other media.
  • Demonstrated skill in managing multi-tiered teams of ten or more professionals.
  • Demonstrated commitment to enhancing diversity through inclusive design and language.
  • Experience in higher education marketing.
