Equipment Operator

Water Distribution

JOB SUMMARY

This position operates heavy equipment in the construction, repair and maintenance of the water distribution system.

MAJOR DUTIES

• Troubleshoots system malfunctions, identifies problems, and coordinates and supervises repairs.
• Supervises the maintenance of assigned vehicles and equipment; maintains truck inventory.
• Operates a variety of heavy and light equipment as needed.
• Performs excavation and site repair duties.
• Repairs landscaping, roadways, driveways, and sidewalks.
• Performs preventative maintenance on vehicles and equipment.
• Operates a variety of hand and power tools.
• Locates valves, meters and water lines.
• Replaces and maintains hydrants.
• Tests, replaces and installs meters.
• Flags traffic at work sites.
• Responds to after-hours emergencies when on-call.
• Provides supports to other divisions and to contractors as assigned.
• Performs related duties.

KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED BY THE POSITION

• Knowledge of water distribution system operation and maintenance principles.
• Knowledge of the hazards inherent to utility maintenance work and the safety measures used to mitigate those hazards.
• Knowledge of the operation, maintenance and repair of a variety of job-related tools and equipment.
• Skill in the analysis of problems and the development and implementation of solutions.
• Skill in the operation and maintenance of heavy equipment.
• Skill in the use of hand and power tools.
• Skill in the establishment of safe work zones.
• Skill in oral and written communication.

COMPLEXITY/SCOPE OF WORK

• The work consists of related equipment operation and maintenance duties. Inclement weather and heavy traffic contribute to the complexity of the position.
• The purpose of this position is to operate heavy equipment in the construction, repair and maintenance of the water distribution system. Successful performance contributes to the efficiency and effectiveness of system operations.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS/ WORK ENVIRONMENT

• The work is typically performed while intermittently sitting, standing, stooping, bending or crouching. The employee frequently lifts light and heavy objects, uses tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity, distinguishes between shades of color, and utilizes the sense of smell.
• The work is typically performed in an office and outdoors, occasionally in cold or inclement weather. The employee is exposed to dust, dirt, grease, machinery with moving parts, contagious or infectious diseases, or irritating chemicals. Work requires the use of protective devices such as masks, goggles, gloves, etc.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

• Knowledge and level of competency commonly associated with completion of specialized training in the field of work, in addition to basic skills typically associated with a high school education.
• Experience sufficient to thoroughly understand the work of subordinate positions to be able to answer questions and resolve problems, usually associated with one to three years experience or service.
• Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver’s license issued by the State of Georgia for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.
• Possession of or ability to readily obtain an appropriate state-certified license for water distribution.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $18.87 - $21.23 per hour

• 8 hour shift

• Heavy equipment operation: 1 year (Preferred)

License/Certification:

• Driver's License (Preferred)
