The Virginia Beach Health Department is hiring Environmental Health Specialists to perform a variety of duties including inspecting permitted facilities such as restaurants, campgrounds, hotels and motels, recreational pools, marinas, migrant labor camps, body art and massage facilities; performing private well inspections; instructing food safety classes; investigating communicable diseases and general environmental complaints; and rabies investigations and abatement.

This position requires the successful completion of training in VDH’s Food program and to obtain credentials in the VDH Standardized in Food program within 18 months of hire.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Knowledge in the natural sciences, including environmental health, community health, biology, microbiology, epidemiology & physics.


  • Knowledge of environmental law with a demonstrated ability to interpret & apply complex regulations relating to a variety of environmental health problems.

  • Demonstrated ability to conduct investigations & inspections in assigned areas.

  • Demonstrated ability to communicate well both orally & in writing; analyze & solve problems; deal effectively with the public concerning inspections, investigations & a variety of health-related issues.

  • Ability to communicate effectively with the public as well as other internal/external partners and staff.

  • Demonstrated proficiency in basic computer software programs.

  • Time management skills necessary in order to meet workload demands.

  • Ability to influence behavior of foodservice employees/management, provide services in professional, courteous manner, present educational programs to adults; uses a customer-service oriented approach to assignments and works effectively as a team member.

  • Must be able to complete training in the VDH Food program and be able to obtain credentials in one of the following within 18 months: VDH Standardized in Food.

  • A valid State Driver’s License is required to operate a state vehicle or if operating a personal vehicle while conducting business on behalf of the agency.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Graduation from college with a degree related to the duties of the position preferred or equivalent experience in environmental health, such as experience gained as an Environmental Health Associate.


  • Experience with Food Safety Regulations.

  • Previous experience in Public Health.

Special Requirements
Employment is contingent upon satisfactory results of a fingerprint based state and federal criminal history background check and the Department of Social Service’s Child Abuse and Neglect Central Registry check, U.S. HHS IG Exclusion List check, employment reference check, and E- Verify. The selected candidate must complete a Statement of Personal Economic Interests as a condition of employment, if applicable (Va. Code § 2.2-3114). Other financial, credit, driving, or other background checks prior to employment may be required for certain positions.

VDH requires all Health-Care Personnel (HCP) to provide documentation of immunization or evidence of immunity to the following: hepatitis B, measles, mumps, rubella, and varicella; a one-time dose of tetanus, diphtheria, and pertussis (Tdap) vaccine regardless of the interval since the last dose of tetanus-diphtheria (Td) vaccine was administered (Td or Tdap boosters shall be received every 10 years); and the current year’s seasonal influenza vaccination.
