By joining the Division of Waste Management/Solid Waste Branch/Permitting Section as an Environmental Engineer II in Franklin County, you will have the opportunity to perform professional engineering work in the application review and inspections of solid and special waste landfills to determine compliance with environmental engineering standards, laws, and regulations.

Holders of the Environmental Engineer II position will complete tasks such as:
  • Conducts engineering technical reviews of solid and special waste landfill applications using engineering principles and best practices to determine compliance with applicable environmental laws and regulations.
  • Reviews Construction Progress Reports relating to construction activities of solid and special waste landfills to ensure compliance with approved plans and environmental laws and regulations.
  • Participates in landfill construction inspections, including subgrade proof-rolls, clay and synthetic liner, and leachate collection system inspections.
  • Assists in compiling computer generated site-specific environmental permits using Advantage Regulatory Management (ARM).
  • Provides technical assistance to other department staff, owners and operators, citizens, consultants, other governmental agencies, and others.

Minimum Requirements
EDUCATION: See Special Requirements.

EXPERIENCE, TRAINING, OR SKILLS: Must have two years of engineering experience in addition to that required for licensure as a professional engineer.

Substitute EDUCATION for EXPERIENCE: Master's degree in engineering will substitute for one year of the required experience. Graduate work in engineering beyond a master's degree will substitute for the required experience on a year-for-year basis.

Substitute EXPERIENCE for EDUCATION: NONE

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS (AGE, LICENSURE, REGULATION, ETC.): Must be licensed as a professional engineer by the State Board of Licensure for Professional Engineers and Land Surveyors. http://kyboels.ky.gov/ Must maintain any required licensure(s), certification(s), or other credentials for the length of employment in this classification. Working Conditions
Work is typically performed in an office setting. Travel throughout the state may be required.
Probationary Period
This job has an initial and promotional probationary period of 6 months, except as provided in KRS 18A.111.
