POSITION SUMMARY: Under the guidance of the Aquatics Director, the Entry Level Swim Instructor shadows and assists with instruction and motivation for students in swimming classes.

This position supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: • Assists for the safety, learning and enjoyment of all participants in the class. • Shadows swimming lessons in accordance with YMCA guidelines. • Learns how to prepare lesson plans according to YMCA guidelines.

• Build effective, authentic relationships with students and parents; help them connect with each other and the YMCA. Inform parents if any difficulties arise and keep them informed of student’s accomplishments. Encourage parent involvement and identify potential volunteers. • Convey information on aquatics programs and schedules and as appropriate refer students and parents to other programs.
• Maintain records as required (i.e. attendance, progress reports, etc.). • Attend staff meetings and trainings as scheduled. • Follow all YMCA policies, rules, regulations and procedures, including emergency and safety procedures.

Complete incident and accident reports as necessary. • Organize and put away needed class equipment. Report damaged equipment. • Perform other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS: • Must be at least 16 years of age. • Certifications that must be obtained within 30 days include: CPR for the Professional Rescuer, AED, Basic First Aid certification and Emergency Oxygen from ASHI or Red Cross. • Must obtain YMCA Swim Instructor certification or equivalent at first certification course offered by YMCA of Metropolitan Detroit after hire.
