Are you looking for a career in tech or telecommunications? Rainbow Design Service’s Designer in Training program is an opportunity to receive on the job paid training that leads to an exciting career in a booming industry.

We are looking for driven, self-motivated, inquisitive, detail-oriented people to join our Designer in Training Program. Extensive training provided in outside plant (OSP) network engineering using our proprietary GIS mapping & design software.

As a part of our approximately 14-week program, you will be trained in network design using CAD (Computer Aided Drafting) software for to design internet and cable television infrastructure in the US.

No specific CAD experience required; however any design software experience is a plus – Adobe, 3D modeling, ArcGIS, SketchUp, etc.

We partner with some of the nation’s largest telecom companies to survey, draft, and design coax and fiber routes across America. Recently, we were contracted for several large-scale projects for new clients. We are now looking to hire and fast-track the training of new designers as we celebrate our 28th year in business.

POSITION SUMMARY

The Designer in Training program will equip you with the technical knowledge and the tools to become Telecommunications Network Designer (Designer I) within a target timeframe of 90-120 days. As a part of our comprehensive training program, you will participate in an immersive development program designed around a blend of classroom training, on-the-job training, and one-on-one coaching.

Upon completion of the Designer in Training program, as a Designer I, you will produce accurate, efficient, and cost-effective digital design schematics and deliverables for the clients of Rainbow Design Services. You will work in an accelerated learning capacity to route, draft, design, and document aerial and underground telecommunications infrastructure using GIS mapping platforms and CAD based design software. While this position requires considerable independent judgement to interpret and apply project specifications, you will receive on-going support from the leadership team and peers.

The importance of our work cannot be understated. Rainbow Design Services works with leading telecommunications company on several high-profile projects spanning from upgrading existing infrastructure to designing all-new high-speed broadband internet networks that bring internet access to underserved areas with the goal of diminishing the existing “digital divide” in the US. Additionally, we often play a key role in getting communities back online following natural disasters such as hurricanes, floods or other extreme weather events.

** Designer-in-Training program team members qualify for comprehensive benefits, with an introductory pay rate of $18/hour, and ongoing training opportunities in the booming telecommunications industry. Upon successful completion of the Designer-in-Training program you will be elevated a to Designer position with a starting compensation of $19/hr. The Designer position is a springboard for four further levels of growth within the Designer career path, as well as other internal opportunities outside the Designer space.

HOURS & LOCATION

  • Our Linn Station office is located in Jeffersontown, KY (Louisville Metro Area). The Designer in Training program and the Designer I role are full-time, on-site positions.

Note: Designers at the Designer II level are eligible for remote work arrangements.

  • The standard hours for this position are either M-F, 7:00 AM – 3:30 PM or 9:00 AM to 5:30 PM, with occasional overtime expected.

MAIN JOB TASKS

  • Participate in and successfully complete our Designer in Training program with a mix of classroom training, on the job training, and live work in preparation to be elevated to a full-fledged Designer role
  • Gain an in-depth understanding of CATV and fiber optics architectures (e.g., coaxial, HFC, FTTx, etc.)
  • Draft and document new and existing telecommunications infrastructure; cable television and internet.
  • Evaluate customer needs and job intake utilizing our workflow tools.
  • Work with our Quality Control teams to ensure the most effective and efficient designs are delivered.
  • Produce complete point-to-point design schematics of internet and other telecommunications infrastructure using mapping and CAD based design software
  • Produce accurate client deliverables, including before and after prints, bill of materials, etc.
  • Other duties as assigned

POSITION REQUIREMENTS – SKILLS & ABILITIES

  • Strong aptitude for and desire to learn and use new software systems; I.e., learning new programs and applications.
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Strong communications skills, both written and verbal
  • Bachelor’s Degree in a technical field – preferred
  • Previous technical design experience preferred
  • AutoCAD or other CAD software experienceis a plus
  • Telecommunication experience is a plus
  • Advanced analytical abilities
  • Basic mathematical abilities
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite (Teams, Outlook, Word, Excel, etc.)
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment with tight deadlines
  • Ability to learn, synthesize, and apply new information on a regular basis
  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal
  • Strong organizational skills
