Walnut Hill School for the Arts seeks a full-time faculty member to join the Humanities department to teach 10th and 11th grade English starting in January 2023. This is a full-time position for the spring semester of the 2022-2023 academic year with the potential of continuing in the fall, reporting to the Head of Humanities.

The Humanities program aims to teach skills and habits of attention, critical thinking, intellectual persistence, and reflection through careful reading and writing in the study of history and literature. In doing this, the department plays a central role in students' education as artists, as intellectuals, and as engaged citizens. A student-centered approach emphasizing depth over breadth is the hallmark of a Walnut Hill Humanities class. The department is committed to an ongoing process of building our capacity as anti-racist educators.

Responsibilities:

Teaching & Department Duties

  • Teach 3 English sections; utilize best practices in teaching within this academic discipline;
  • Prepare lessons and develop curriculum that reflects the diverse educational and cultural backgrounds of the student body; teach, lead, and guide students and promote an open and safe classroom space; and
  • Utilize technology and other educational tools to support student learning.

Collaboration & Community Engagement

  • Support the Student Life program including serving as a student advisor, club advisor, chaperoning school events, weekend duty, and/or participating in other opportunities for community involvement that arise throughout the school year;
  • Participate in the school’s restorative justice initiative; actively learn about and practice anti-racist work;
  • Work collaboratively with colleagues across all departments to foster a positive working and educational environment that supports the school’s mission, vision, and core values;
  • Attend and participate in all department meetings, assembly, Professional Development days, training and orientation programs, benefit meetings, mandatory seminars, team-building exercises, and safety training;
  • Attend and/or engage in student arts productions, shows, exhibitions, and performances; and
  • Pursue professional development opportunities in and out of school; display willingness and ability to grow, learn, explore new approaches, and practice self-reflection.

Administrative and Additional Responsibilities

  • Perform other administrative or educational duties as assigned by the Head of School or their designee;
  • Utilize the learning management system (LMS) to facilitate communication across the school community; take and record attendance, and maintain Class Pages for each academic class; maintain grades, comments, and progress reports as required and as needed;
  • Keep records of correspondence with parents, progress of advisees, records of teaching practice and student work and utilize the LMS appropriately to communicate student issues; and
  • Complete required paperwork, forms, surveys, employment documents, background checks, fingerprinting, online training programs, request and report absences, accidents, and injuries, and follow other school policy and legal requirements by established deadlines.

Skills and Qualifications

  • 3+ years teaching or equivalent experience required; experience working with high school students preferred;
  • Bachelor’s degree in English or related field or equivalent experience required, Master’s degree recommended;
  • Wide repertoire of teaching skills including developing in-person and online curriculum;
  • Comfort with technology and willingness to adopt new technologies as needed;
  • Innovative teaching practices and a focus on skills-centered learning;
  • Strong collaboration and team-oriented working and leadership skills;
  • Possess cultural competence in working with diverse populations;
  • Demonstrated experience teaching texts that reflect a diversity of voices, identities, and experiences;
  • Demonstrated commitment to fostering an inclusive community;
  • Ability to speak authentically about the imperative for diversity, equity, and inclusion and comfort with cross-cultural dialogue;
  • Share an educational and artistic vision that aligns with the core principles of Walnut Hill;
  • Ability to balance a pursuit of academic, artistic, and institutional excellence with compassion and nurture for each individual;
  • COVID-19 Vaccination and Pfizer or Moderna booster or valid exemption required; and
  • Positive attitude, passion for teaching and learning, and a sense of humor!

Physical Demands

Physical demands include dexterity for tools, equipment, and office machine and supply operation including but not limited to writing, typing, using electronic devices, computer, phone, calculator, copy/fax machine, and printers. Stooping, bending, traveling to/from locations on campus, ascending/descending stairs, reaching, and sitting or standing for extended periods of time are common.
