This position in the Department of English plays a central role in supporting English Language Learners at SCSU. The person assists with ensuring student success in both the Intensive English Center ( IEC ) and English for Academic Purposes programs.

Job Description
To administer placement and exit testing, advise, and place incoming multilingual (resident and international) students; assist the IEC-EAP director in relevant programmatic areas; liaise with relevant university and system offices; serve on university and system committees; teach; and assist in recruiting and retaining multilingual learners. The position serves a critical role in assessing student language preparation and skills in assuring student success and ongoing development of English language skills attainment for academic purposes. This is advanced and collaborative work, interacting with multiple campus stakeholders, and requiring specialized and dedicated personnel.
  • Administer non-academic programming for multilingual learners of English
    • Administer assessment testing to place and advise Intensive English Center (IEC) students
    • Administer assessment testing to place and advise English for Academic Purposes coursework
    • Assist with planning and implementing summer language and culture programs that provide year-round instruction and cultural growth for current and incoming students
    • Manage course enrollments to determine balanced instructional offerings, materials, tutoring, staffing needs and locations
    • Work with IEC-EAP director to manage all facets of IEC placement and EAP placement and operations
  • Instruct undergraduate ESL courses
    • Teach EAP courses as needed
    • Assist with and determine classroom texts, etc.
  • Advise multi-language learner students
    • Provide non-academic discipline related advising to IEC and EAP students
    • Collaborate with campus stakeholders in Center for International Studies, Advising and Registration, Testing Services on protocols and advising outcomes
    • Provide transfer student advising to maintain student timelines to completion
    • Inform and update NAVIGATE student profiles
  • Develop and maintain strong relationships with key stakeholders
    • Communicate with academic departments to provide updates on student placement and success
    • Serve as liaison between EAP-IEC and various student success-oriented offices on campus regarding student progress and success; e.g., Multicultural Student Services; Athletics; Career Center; Advising; Writing Center; Center for International Studies
    • Inform and update NAVIGATE student profiles
    • Communicate with the MnState system office on assessment, Academic Course Placement, Accuplacer, and other system-wide services
  • Assist Composition Director
    • Assist with course placement; transition to English courses
    • Transcript review for transfer students meeting course placement and university requirements in English
  • Other duties as assigned

Required Qualifications
  • Master’s degree in TESL, Applied Linguistics or related field
  • Minimum of 2 years of professional experience in a higher education setting in EAP
  • Demonstrated comprehensive knowledge of English language assessment
  • Demonstrated experience managing language proficiency decision processes
  • Demonstrated experience working with diverse students/colleagues
  • Demonstrated advanced administrative experience
  • Demonstrated experience in managing budgets
  • Supervisory experience

Preferred Qualifications
  • Demonstrated experience instructing EAP classes in a higher education setting
  • Experience administering an EAP program in a higher education setting
  • Experience using college-readiness assessment tools such as Accuplacer
  • Experience assisting college students with transfer options including the use of tools such as Transferology
  • Knowledge of best practices associated with college assessments for international students
