Job description
An ELI instructor will provide quality instruction and/or tutoring in English on specific subject areas in classes, small groups and/or one-on-one settings as assigned through use of carefully planned course materials and lessons. Instructors are hired on a semester basis, depending on student enrollment needs and satisfactory job performance as determined by class observations and student evaluations, and professional background or experience to teach the courses available. Teaching assignments typically range from 2 to 18 hours a week.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities
The instructor will follow all requirements and policies as outlined in the ELI Institute’s Instructor Handbook, a copy of which will be given to each instructor. The basic responsibilities are:
  • Develop curriculum and plan lessons based on course and student needs.
  • Provide the coordinator with syllabi, lesson plan outline, tests and final exams for courses taught each term.
  • In collaboration with the ELI coordinator, determine course materials and should make adjustments to materials to fit student needs as necessary during the term.
  • Monitor students to evaluate progress and give appropriate assessments to provide a course grade at the end of the term as well as promote student improvement.
  • Be available to students at appropriate times before and after the class period.
  • Keep accurate records of student attendance and tardiness as well as any other required reports as necessary, such as student probation, per federal regulation.
  • Attend beginning and ending term meetings as well as participate in placement and proficiency testing.
  • In addition to teaching duties, also give guidance and encouragement to students in their cultural adjustment and study in the U.S.A.

  • Good interpersonal and cross-cultural communication skills, including patience and tact
  • Willingness to learn and adapt new technology, multimedia and teaching methodology into the classroom.
  • Willingness to teach all levels and skills and contribute to the development of the ELI program
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality
  • Attendance and punctuality are essential to this position


Physical Requirements
  • Sedentary Work: Exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects.


Required Minimum Qualifications
  • Master’s degree in TESL or TESOL, or a closely related field (A bachelor’s degree and/or TESL/TEFL certificates may be accepted upon program evaluation with teaching experience). In-progress MAT also accepted for probate role.
  • High level of written and oral proficiency in the English language; American English preferred.
  • Must have experience teaching international or non-native English speaking students, preferably at the post-secondary or adult level.
  • A background check may be required of the successful applicant.
