Duties

Once selected for the Electrician position in SSA, you will become a key member of the Frank Hagel Building Facilities Team. Duties include but are not limited to performing the full range of electrical work found in the Frank Hagel Federal Building. This work includes layout, installation, and major repair of electrical systems and equipment.

Major Duties include work from oral instructions and written work orders to:

  • Maintain, troubleshoot, repair, and install interior and exterior commercial lighting systems.
  • Maintain, troubleshoot, repair, and install outlets, switches, breakers, distribution panels, transformers, switchgear, and disconnects.
  • Install raceways, conduits, junction boxes, wiring, and overcurrent protective devices for fixtures, apparatus and equipment.
  • Repair, modify, overhaul, assemble, install, test and maintain electrical and mechanical systems and equipment.
  • Install lighting and wall plug circuits during minor space renovations and remodeling efforts.
  • Use hand and power tools, and equipment common to the trade.
  • Assist other tradesmen performing light carpentry, structural, plumbing, mechanical and restoration work.

Applicants must show ability or potential ability in the job elements listed below:
  • Ability to do journeyman level electrical work without more than normal supervision. (Applicants without this ability will be considered ineligible).
  • Ability to plan work, develop materials lists, select tools, and determine methods and techniques to install, modify, and repair systems, circuits, equipment, and controls.
  • Ability to read, interpret and apply building plans, blueprints, equipment wiring diagrams, manufacturers literature and specifications.
  • Ability to determine and install correct type and size of raceways and wiring and protective devices.
  • Ability to perform calculations to determine voltage, wattage, amperage.
  • Ability to troubleshoot faults and analyze, circuits and equipment using multimeters, tools and equipment common to the trade.
  • Possess some skills in another trade such as carpentry, plumbing, locksmithing, fire alarm systems, or HVAC to assist with other maintenance work.
Note: Part-time work is prorated in crediting experience (e.g., if you work 20 hours per week for a 12-month period), you will be credited with 6 months of experience.

Physical Requirements: Stands, stoops, and bends continuously; works on ladders and scaffolds; works in stretched, cramped, and awkward positions. Lifts and carries up to 50 pounds.

Working Conditions: Work is both outside and inside in areas of medium to excessive heat, cold, humidity, dampness, or chilling areas that have intermittent loud noise, dust, fumes, grease, dirt, oils, with exposure to electrical wires and energy. Areas may be slippery and/or have uneven surfaces, in equipment rooms, tunnels, crawl spaces, attics, penthouses, overhead catwalks, scaffolding and/or in tight areas such as manholes and electrical (equipment) closets. May work from ladders, scaffolding and platforms, or lifts at heights up to 30 feet. May occasionally be exposed to the possibility of injury from falling, electrical shock, burns, and rotary devices such as electrical motors.

Additional selections may be made for this vacancy six months from the closing date of this announcement.

Relocation expenses will not be paid.

The full performance level of this position is WG-10.
