The Virginia of the Department for the Blind and Vision Impaired is seeking an Education Coordinator to provide a quality program of individualized rehabilitation services, educational consultation, technical assistance, and instruction that will empower eligible individuals to achieve their desired levels of independence consistent with their abilities and informed choices.

To ensure that Virginia’s infants, toddlers, and children who are blind, vision impaired or deafblind receive the services they need in order to participate and progress in developmental, educational, and extracurricular activities.

This is a very large geographic service area and you do not need to live in the immediate Roanoke Area. The position covers the following counties and the neighboring cities: Alleghany, Pittsylvania County, Amherst, Floyd, Pulaski County, Appomattox, Franklin, Giles, Roanoke, Bedford, Halifax, Henry, Botetourt, Campbell, Montgomery, Craig and Patrick. Note: A State Vehicle is available

Minimum Qualifications
Possess a Virginia collegiate professional license and an endorsement preferred in Special Education-Visual Impairments PreK-12, or the completion of the 8 core VI Consortium classes (2 Braille classes, Medical Information, Characteristics of VI, Curriculum and Assessment, Assistive Technology, Teaching Methods and Orientation & Mobility) and the Introduction to Special Education and the Consultation and Collaboration courses. Successfully completion of Virginia’s Early Intervention Modules and received the Early Intervention Certification within nine months of employment.
Experience teaching students who are blind and visually impaired as a Teacher of the Blind and Visually Impaired. Experience in organizing events and making presentations; in writing IEP, teaching goals, and objectives as a Teacher of the Blind and Vision Impaired, participating in IEP meetings, consulting with regular education teachers, transition specialists, and vocational rehabilitation counselors to assist students who are blind, vision impaired or deafblind. Experience in teaching infants and toddlers.
Demonstrated knowledge of Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), Individualized Education Program (IEP), the federal, state and agency rights of parents and students, adapted materials and equipment, eye disorders and the functional limitations of eye diseases; and of individual organizations, special education related services, visual impairment eligibility guidelines for the Virginia Department of Education, Expanded Core Curriculum for Children and Youth who are blind, vision impaired, or deafblind, role of a Teacher of the Blind and Vision Impaired, high and low tech visual accommodations/technology, infant and toddler development, the impact of a visual impairment on all areas of a child’s development, and the transition of toddlers from early intervention to school.
Demonstrated ability to complete a functional vision assessment, assess developmental delays in children who are blind, vision impaired, deafblind, and complete learning media assessments to evaluate communication skills; to develop and implement programs of sensory stimulation, concept development, gross/fine motor development, self-help skills, cognitive development, adaptive communication skills, and orientation and mobility; to provide counseling, consultation and technical assistance to children who are blind, visually impaired, or deafblind, their parents, and their teachers and to work independently and within a team environment, develop collaborative relationships with teachers, students, and parents; to organize, prioritize and plan work, manage time effectively, and develop service plans, communicate effectively with students, teachers and parents.

Preferred Qualifications
An endorsement in Special Education preferred.
