CTL Engineering Inc. Job Description: Driller Helper

Location: Shelbyville, Kentucky- Must be local Travel: Minimum within a 1-2 hour range using a company vehicle, overnight stays about 50% of the time.
General Statement of Duties: A Driller/Driller Helper will assist the crew chief in solid stem and hollow stem auger drilling techniques. The assistant will help move, set up, and operate drilling rigs and related equipment to drill holes for geotechnical exploration test borings. Site investigation/geotechnical drilling is done to determine the soil characteristics on construction sites.
Supervision Received and Exercised: Works independently on broad projects under the direction of a Project Engineer. No direct supervisory duties are required, but provide direction to associates on a project basis or supervise direct reports.
Examples of Duties: (Any one position may not include all of the duties listed, nor do the listed examples include all that may be found in this job.)
  • Expedite field supplies.
  • Perform duties at multiple job sites.
  • Communicate job site conditions with engineering staff.
  • Assure that all drilling functions, including quality control, quality assurance, and verification are performed by the standard drilling methods, project specifications, and other contract documents.
  • Perform yard duties at the direction of the supervisor.
  • Assist in measuring test boring locations.
  • Load and unload trucks.
  • Locate borings as needed.
  • Smoothly and quickly connect and disconnect the lower parts of the drill pipe when it is being lowered into and raised from the hole.
  • Collect split spoon samples to be analyzed.
  • Clean and maintain equipment.
  • Rock Coring and Rock Core recovery
  • Help move drilling rig and equipment from site to site and set up.
  • Dig and clean mud pits and drains.
  • Assist with well development and pumping tests.
  • Operate equipment such as pumps for air, water, and mud, and equipment and tools used to correct problems in drilled holes caused by mechanical breakdowns or by harmful natural conditions.
  • Carry out minor maintenance and repairs, including lubrication and cleaning.
  • Fill out drilling logs; write daily report logs as needed.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Knowledge: Knowledge of engineering and construction industry, Knowledge of leading others, Knowledge of highway construction specifications, Knowledge of Drilling.
  • Skills: Strong communication skills, Skill in writing reports, maintenance repairs, and drilling, Skill in measuring and testing.
  • Abilities: Ability to clean and maintain equipment, Ability monitor and enforce quality control standards and specifications, Ability to be reliable, on-time e, a team player, safety-oriented, Ability to read blueprints, Ability to be quality-minded and client-focused, Ability to move equipment and perform yard duties.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Education: High School Diploma or related experience required. 40-hour OSHA Training is preferred but not required.
  • Experience: One to three years of experience in Civil/Geotechnical Field Services needed. Reliable, on-time, team player, strong communication skills, ability to monitor and enforce quality control standards and specifications, read blueprints, quality-minded and client-focused.
  • Desirable: Associate's Degree in Civil Engineering Technology or certification in a related field.

Education/Certifications:
  • 40-hour OSHA Training is preferred but not required.

Physical Requirements: Primary work location is in the field and will require the candidate to stand for extended periods. Ability to safely and successfully perform the essential job functions consistent with the ADA, FMLA, and other federal, state, and local standards, including meeting qualitative and/or quantitative productivity standards. Ability to maintain regular, punctual attendance consistent with the ADA, FMLA, and other federal, state, and local standards. Must be able to lift and carry up to 50 lbs. Due to the nature of these projects, non-local applicants must be willing to relocate temporarily (6-7 months) or long-term. Temporary relocation may involve rotations to return home.
