The Public Works Department provides services to the Schertz community in a number of areas including street maintenance, solid waste, water / wastewater, drainage and stormwater management, to ensure Schertz is kept safe, clean, liveable and enjoyable. The Drainage division is responsible for the maintenance and management of 11.8 miles of drainage ditches and right-of-ways, as well as stormwater inlets, floodways, alleys and compliance with regulations. Drainage is also responsible for reviewing the issuance of permits for development that might affect the infrastructure, such as subdivision plans, and providing guidance to other departments as needed. Schertz is looking to hire dedicated, service oriented people to their Public Works team!
POSITION SUMMARY:
The Drainage Worker I position includes unskilled and semi-skilled work involved in the maintenance and up-keep of drainage ditches and right of ways. Has the responsibility for the preparation of records and reports; has daily contact with the public; makes few decisions, mostly of a simple nature. Has no supervisory responsibility.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Loads and unloads construction materials and bench stock supplies.
  • Excavates and back-fills trenches and excavates with hand tools
  • Cleans and performs simple repairs on gutters, drains, underground storm utility systems, culverts and other structures.
  • Operates power tools and light construction equipment.
  • Performs rough carpentry, painting, and concrete work.
  • Operates power tools and light construction equipment.
  • Operates pick-up trucks, tractors, mowers and backhoe.
  • Assists other Public Works Division/City Departments when requested.
  • Mows grass in drainage ditches, alleys and right of ways.
  • Performs drainage channel maintenance.
  • Performs other job-related duties as required.
  • Coordinates “On the Job Training and City Safety Programs.
  • Maintains inventories related to division equipment and supplies.
  • Assumes the duties of supervisor in his/her absence.
  • On call 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
  • Good Housekeeping and organization of tools, equipment, vehicles and work area. Assures crews are organized and ready to complete task at hand.
  • Application of herbicide and other chemicals.

EDUCATION AND EXPIERENCE REQUIREMENTS:
High School Diploma or GED equivalent.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Requires above average knowledge of construction equipment, ground maintenance equipment and powered/non-powered hand tools
  • Requires knowledge of pickup trucks, tractors, mowers, backhoes, chemical application equipment, weed eaters, and related shop support equipment.

CERTIFICATIONS AND LCENSES REQUIRED:
Must have a valid Class "B" Texas Commercial Driver’s License, or be able to obtain one within six (6) months of appointment to this position.
