Duties include but not limited to:
Receives and transmits messages primarily by radio and maintains radio log;
Receives emergency and non-emergency calls; determines location and nature of emergency and dispatches appropriate personnel and equipment where and when needed;
Receives and forwards service requests, complaints, and other calls as appropriate;
Enters and retrieves a variety of data into computer systems concerning activities, complaints and offense reports; operates a computer terminal utilizing the VCIN/NCIC Network running criminal histories, driver transcripts, and vehicle and driver information as requested and enters/modifies warrants, protective orders, and other various documents;
Operates the computer mapping system to locate addresses or cross-streets for calls;
Monitors law enforcement activity as well as Fire and EMS and Animal Control using CAD tracking;
Greets and assists walk-in citizens, receives complaints in person, provides the public with information, assistance or direction when necessary, logs visitors entering and exiting the building, maintains key box and logs out keys;
Monitors DEENS (Dominion Energy Emergency Notification System) for power station test messages and real emergency events; activates alarms throughout the County as appropriate; monitors major weather events;
Performs a variety of general office/clerical functions;
Assists with training newly hired dispatchers; and
Performs other related duties as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS TO PERFORM WORK:
High School Diploma or GED
Or equivalent training, education, and experience
A minimum of one (1) year of communications or dispatch experience or two years of related experience
Possess or be able to successfully complete within the first 12 months of employment the Department of Criminal Justice Services Basic Dispatch Academy, VCIN, and other required certifications, and training
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Knowledge of operating two-way communications systems
Knowledge of the geography of the County; its businesses, borders, and schools
Ability to use various office equipment
Must be able to perform tasks concurrently in a fast-paced environment while maintaining attention to detail
Ability to deal with the public under stressful conditions and remain calm while analyzing situations and providing solutions
Data entry skills and computer proficiency
Strong oral and written communication, interpersonal, and customer service skills
Ability to follow standard procedures and established practices
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates and the public
Ability to work rotating 12 hour shifts to include days, evenings, overnights, weekends, and holidays
Ability to work and/or be placed on stand-by for major events such as weather-related emergencies, natural, or man-made disasters
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
This work is sedentary work; requires exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally; regularly requires lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, or otherwise moving objects. Requires the use of dexterity, hearing, mental acuity, repetitive motion, talking, visual acuity, and walking.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
Due to the nature of the work assignments, incumbents must be able to perform detailed work on multiple, concurrent tasks, with frequent interruptions and under time constraints.
Incumbents are essential personnel and must be available to report to work during inclement weather, disasters, and emergencies.
