Director Job Description

Position Title: Director of the Center for Teaching, Innovation, and Research (CTIR)

Reports to: Vice President for Academic Affairs (VPAA)

Position Summary:
The CTIR Director is the primary individual responsible for planning and implementing professional

development that advances the ability of faculty and staff to employ best practices in teaching, to promote

research, and to advance innovative approaches to program development and engagement with students

and peers. The CTIR Director also, as part of a current Title V grant, oversees the advancement and

sustained implementation of the use of High-Impact Practices (HIPs), specifically writing-intensive

courses (WICs), ePortfolios (ePs), and capstone courses. This is a partially grant-funded position until

September 2025. The position will be considered for institutionalization at the end of the grant, pending

funding.

CTIR Director Responsibilities

Working with campus constituents, the Director will identify campus professional development needs and

develop strategies to deliver campus programming, especially that which promotes the Scholarship of

Teaching and Learning (SoTL), advances best practices in teaching, enhances the Adams Experience, and

supports Adams State University’s Purpose Statement to serve diverse populations as befits our status as

an Hispanic-Serving Institution (HSI).

Programming:
1. Plan and facilitate New Faculty Orientation (NFO).

2. Collaborate with the Faculty & Staff Development Committee and relevant grant staff (Title III,

Title V, NSF) to plan and deliver annual mid-year overnight retreat.

3. Collaborate with equity and inclusion efforts on campus to translate inclusive excellence

initiatives into classroom practice.

4. Identify, schedule, and deliver academic year programming (including identifying and arranging

for facilitators when appropriate) such as:
Learner-centered education workshops;

Workshops focused on professional development for ASU staff;

Procedural workshops (tenure & promotion, curriculum and instruction, grading

procedures, advising students, suicide prevention, etc.);

AITC/Computing Services workshops;

Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) Accountability group;

Culturally-Responsive Pedagogy;

Inviting guest speakers and scholars;

In collaboration with HIP facilitators, develop and deliver professional development to

academic program faculty that supports their ability to integrate High-Impact Practices

into their classes;

Assist facilitators in providing training to academic programs on the research-based

essential qualities that make educational practices high-impact;

Work with the grant Activity Director in coordination with other campus efforts to

integrate and coordinate HIP programming and professional development for campus.

5. Lead Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) Accountability group and provide support for

SoTL.

6. Maintain open discussion with academic units to ascertain programming needs.

7. Develop and deliver surveys as needed, especially in collaboration with grant staff for grant

reporting purposes.

8. Assist with the Mentoring Program for new faculty.

9. Share best practices through email (e.g. monthly “Teachable Moments”).

10. Plan regularly offered teaching institute/conference.

Duties

1. Chair Faculty Development Committee & oversee faculty development budget.

2. Serve on ASU’s Higher Learning Commission (HLC) Criterion 3 Committee.

HLC Criterion 3 - “Teaching and Learning: Quality, Resources, and Support: The

institution provides high quality education, wherever and however its offerings are

delivered.”

3. Campus communication including:
Collaborate with grant directors, IRB, and the Student Scholar Days Committee,

Coordinate registration/RSVP/attendance forms for participants in professional

development programming,

Collaborate with internal and external presenters,

Coordinate in promoting other cross-campus programming such as Kindred Spirits

Luncheons, Title V sponsored events, and Adams Experience workshops.

4. Stay current on SoTL, HIPs, and other teaching best practices by traveling to conferences (e.g.

AABLEE, AAC&U) and researching new developments which promote teaching excellence.

5. Facilitate High-Impact Practices (HIP) implementation:
Serve as the expert resource on HIPs,

Promote e-portfolios (eP), First-Year Seminar (FYS), writing-intensive courses (WICS),

and capstone as curricular practices at ASU,

Identify and train faculty to be HIP facilitators, and provide ongoing support as requested

by the facilitators,

Work with the HIP facilitators to develop rubrics for each HIP based on AAC&U and

HLC guidelines,

Assist HIP facilitators with in establishing expectations for each HIP while recognizing

the disciplinary variations of each program,

Assist in the creation and maintenance of a Virtual Center for HIPs, where

faculty can access professional development and best practices as established by

the HIP facilitators,

Assist academic programs to identify courses in which new and existing HIPs are

included and assess for effectiveness or improvement,

Use assessment data to continually improve the program,

Serve as primary liaison between HIP facilitators and Title V personne,

Collaborate with the Title V Cornerstone to Capstone Grant Project Director, the Activity

Director, and other ASU State staff to advance the grant goals,

Provide updates on HIP implementation to Adams State offices and staff, such as

Admissions, recruitment and retention councils, PR/Marketing, CoRE, Academic Affairs,

and Student Affairs,

Promote/Enhance the HIP Mini-Grant program in collaboration with Title V Activity

Director,

Assist with collecting and developing material for the Adams Experience website page,

Coordinate with faculty/staff leading initiatives to integrate other HIPs into the

undergraduate curriculum to ensure a consistent approach,

Adhere to university and Title V federal guidelines, and

Keep accurate records for Title V grant reporting.

6. Make programming materials accessible to distance faculty/staff.

7. Develop and complete reports & evaluation of programming.

8. Stay current in Faculty Education literature.

9. Facilitate scheduling of CTIR events.

10. Develop/maintain web presence.

Required Qualifications

Master’s degree required; Ph.D./Terminal degree preferred.

College teaching experience.

Experience planning and leading professional development programming.

Experience managing a budget.

Knowledge of and experience with evaluation, assessment, and data analysis.

Demonstrated success using one or more HIPs with undergraduate students.

Demonstrated ability to work collegially and collaboratively with diverse internal and external

constituencies.

Demonstrated commitment to the principles of equity, inclusion, access, and anti-racism.

Demonstrated record of successful commitment to team- and project-based work.

Strong communication/presentation skills, planning, and organizational skills.

Relevant ability working with underserved/underrepresented populations.

Ability to advance the university’s commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion among the

College's faculty, staff, students, research, teaching and community outreach, with relevant

programs, goals and activities.
