States Logistics Services, Inc. is a third-party logistics company (3PL) operating in Southern California and Phoenix areas. We are growing and in need of a Director of Safety and Risk Management. This position supports the operation as a whole and can be based out of Fontana or Buena Park, however, regular travel to the other region as well as Arizona will be required.

This position formulates, develops, and coordinates warehouse and office safety programs and procedures, as well as all risk and loss control functions of the organization. Additionally, this position is responsible for purchasing insurance programs, overseeing high-dollar claims, identifying exposure, and recommending solutions.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Reports to the VP, HR & Safety, in administering safety, security, risk and lost control policies of the organization to minimize the frequency and severity of company accidents and injuries within our office personnel, our warehouse team members, and our Class A truck drivers.
  • Oversees property, liability, worker’s compensation, auto, and all other insurance claims with the company’s insurance carriers. Oversees accurate and detailed record-keeping for all claims and helps with necessary reporting.
  • Works with Transportation and Warehouse staff to find creative, practical solutions and enhancements to their safety protocols. Makes recommendations for major projects, equipment purchases, or safety programs.
  • Monitor and enhance the forklift operator certification program for all applicable company personnel, to comply with all OSHA, Federal, and State requirements. Ensure all other General training is conducted, documented, and evaluated regularly.
  • Conducts regular inspections of company facilities, handling equipment, and other warehouse/admin safety programs to eliminate potential safety hazards. Works with Operations to establish a proactive and timely correction plan.
  • Conducts regular security evaluations of company facilities for conditions that pose potential security issues, consistency with company policy, etc.
  • Verify monthly safety committee and small group meetings occur and track results.
  • Develop new training materials for required regulatory training and assist in educating employees.
  • Drive continuous safety improvements, audit work areas, review incident reports and recommend enhancements.
  • Create and sustain a positive safety culture in all facilities and terminals.
  • Communicate and schedule monthly and quarterly safety meetings with management and review safety concerns.
  • Work with the Transportation Safety staff to ensure quality programs and proactive safety measures are in place and always improving.
  • Maintains a system for reporting, monitoring, and correcting serious safety problems.
  • Attend relevant seminars to ensure ongoing preparedness.
  • In cases of accidents/injuries, ensure that refresher training is conducted.
  • Oversees drug and alcohol post-accident screening procedures. Ensures all new hires and promoted staff members receive proper safety training relative to their job assignments.
  • Create/obtain information for annual insurance renewal and supply it to the insurance broker. Be aware of new insurance coverages or changes in business which might require increased coverage. Assist in all insurance-related company decisions.

Requirements:

  • High school graduate or equivalent. College degree desirable, especially if related to the safety industry. Certified Safety Professional preferred.
  • Five to seven years’ experience developing, implementing and/or managing a safety program in a logistics environment.
  • Valid OSHA 30 card preferred
  • While this job is generally Mon-Fri, this position may require weekends, evenings, and holidays as incidents occur.
  • Travel up to 50% (Buena Park, Fontana, Tolleson, Safety Conventions)
  • Must interact with all employees in a positive manner and be able to enforce policy and disciplinary action when required.
  • A valid driver’s license is required.
  • While visiting job sites, walking, climbing, reaching, grabbing, lifting up to 50 pounds may be required.
  • Must know rules and regulations as they pertain to safety (CAL OSHA, OSHA, Worker’s Compensation regulations – federal and CA)
  • Must possess excellent verbal and written communications skills.
  • Must be able to multi-task and be professional.
  • Must be able to lead meetings and report out to various audiences.
  • Must be able to work well with all types of people.
