JOB SUMMARY:
The Director of Preparatory School leads NEC’s renowned Preparatory Division, engaging 250 accomplished and dedicated faculty to deliver a high-quality musical curriculum to more than 1,500 students of a range of musical interests.
With a commitment to centering inclusivity, diversity, equity, and belonging in executing key responsibilities, the Director is a creative, dynamic, and experienced musician, educator, and administrator who oversees Preparatory faculty, curriculum, recruitment, and budget management, and fosters meaningful and inclusive lifelong musical engagement amongst a diverse community of students and their families. The Director will provide administrative leadership to development, personnel management, student success, and tangible efforts to promote diversity, broadly defined.
Reporting to the Executive Director of Expanded Education and working collaboratively across the institution, the Director shapes and leads artistic, academic, and planning and operations, purposefully aligning programs, enrollment, and partnerships to advance the institution’s mission, vision, and revenue. The incumbent will be a creative leader with demonstrated communication, organization, management, and strategic planning abilities. They will be actively engaged in artistic practice and deeply committed to quality instruction and broader student success initiatives. The successful candidate will demonstrate the skills needed to manage daily operations while focusing on long-range plans to sustain the growth and excellence associated with NEC’s mission, ensuring an optimal student experience, and an understanding of instrumental and vocal ensemble management.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Lead and manage all academic responsibilities of Prep–including artistic, educational, programmatic policies, and operations—within the context of NEC’s strategic priorities and goals.
  • Recruit and oversee faculty; chair Prep Faculty Council.
  • Partner with faculty to create, develop, and implement a diverse range of programs and curriculum that engage a wide range of learners.
  • Support students and their families to ensure the highest quality musical experience.
  • Provide artistic leadership, including oversight of auditions, admissions, registrarial functions, and programming for more than twenty large ensembles, curation of guest-artist masterclass series, direction of faculty recital series, oversight of NEC Prep International Touring program, etc.
  • Host and support BostonBEAM (Bridge to Equity and Achievement in Music), to strengthen the pipeline to professional music careers for young musicians underrepresented in classical music; chair BostonBEAM Steering Committee; supervise and mentor BostonBEAM Program Director, as well as student manager.
  • Oversee and develop current NEC Prep partnerships; liaise with local and international arts organizations to create new partnerships; focus on strengthening relationships within and around Boston.
  • Drive student recruitment strategy to meet enrollment and revenue goals.
  • Manage and mentor an administrative team.
  • Collaborate with NEC’s college division around intersectional programming and opportunities, including the Community Engagement and Professional Studies (CEPS) department.
  • Collaborate with Office of Cultural Equity and Belonging to create a diverse and inclusive program and community.
  • Partner with Office of Marketing and Communications to drive enrollment, elevate brand, and expand awareness.
  • Partner with Office of Advancement and Engagement around fundraising, as well as parent and alumni engagement.
  • Liaise with the Preparatory School Committee of NEC’s Board of Trustees

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Experienced professional musician, educator, and administrator, with relevant education commensurate with the expectations of the position.
  • Dynamic interpersonal skills, including nuanced interpersonal and management skills, capacity to steward institutional relationships, and ability to solve problems creatively.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead a complex music education program with vision, excellence, and creativity.
  • Strong track record in teaching in a pre-collegiate environment.
  • Strength in working collaboratively and communicating effectively, both verbally and in writing.
  • Exceptional judgment, discretion, and integrity when working with students, faculty, and staff in an educational environment.
  • Demonstrated cultural competencies and commitment to advancing NEC's values of cultural equity and belonging.
  • Knowledge of Title IX and other compliance issues related to teaching minors.
  • Demonstrated success in organizing and balancing multiple and concurrent projects.
  • Relevant budgetary skills commensurate with the expectations of the position
