SUPERVISOR: Vice President of Institutional Advancement

POSITION DESCRIPTION:
The Director of Philanthropy, in partnership with the Vice Presidents of Institutional Advancement, will be responsible for cultivating and securing philanthropic gifts to support the mission of the Kansas Health Science Center (KHSC) and the development of the Kansas College of Osteopathic Medicine (KansasCOM.) The Director of Philanthropy will play a key role in fund development activity across the country to build visibility and financial resources, working closely with President, Dean and faculty. This position helps develop and administer the organization’s short- and long-range development plans and is directly responsible for continuing to refine the development strategy and function of KHSC as we continue to grow.
Principle Duties:
  • Identify potential contributors including individuals, corporations, and foundations; develops strategies to secure major philanthropic support for annual support, as well as special projects and campaigns.
  • Actively manage a portfolio of prospects, working closely with the VP of Institutional Advancement, President, and Dean to create compelling strategies for transformational gifts.
  • Participate in the development and execution of the integrated development plan including individual giving, grant development, direct mail, special events, employee giving, planned giving, and an endowment strategy for the organization.
  • Ensure the development and execution of comprehensive relationship management strategies and the achievement of assigned growth, retention, participation, and revenue goals for the individuals/groups within assigned portfolio.
  • Manage donor recognition/appreciation activities and events.
  • Research, identify, develop, and facilitate short-term and long-term strategic fundraising plan including strong stewardship activities to ensure relationships are developed for future giving.
  • Partner with Board of Trustees, Campaign Leadership Council, Dean, President, and others in solicitation techniques and involve them in major gift activities.
  • Create goals and strategies surrounding resource development, ultimately creating a process for implementing activities relating to all fundraising and major gift campaigns.
  • Attend community events on behalf of KHSC-KansasCOM, as needed, to generate commitment, inspire loyalty, and a sense of purpose by sharing the organization’s mission.
  • Develop and nurture strategic alliances, partners, and collaborative relationships with the medical community, industry leaders, and businesses.
  • Maintain professional contact with other institutions, associations, and organizations where collaboration and networking are of benefit for current and future support.
  • Additional duties may arise and be assigned as the institution continues to form.
Essential Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Possess exceptional written and interpersonal communication skills with the ability to interact with diverse internal and external constituents.
  • Remains flexible and agile during periods of growth and change.
  • Can effectively communicate/present in small and large settings required.
  • Ability to remain curious, ask questions, and understand programs under development.
  • Articulates, compellingly, the mission and vision of the organization/programs.
  • Adept at engaging, cultivating, soliciting, and stewarding individuals from all walks of life and varying philanthropic capacity level.
  • Ability to work closely and collaboratively with colleagues.
Position Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in business, communication, marketing, or public relations; advanced degree a plus.
  • Proven experience in fund development or sales required; experience in higher education and/or healthcare a plus.
  • Success in solicitation and closing 6+ figure philanthropic gifts.
  • Proven ability to advance the interests of donors or potential donors while honoring and protecting the best interests of the organization. Must honor and uphold ethics in fundraising.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office and development databases required, experience with Blackbaud’s Raisers Edge a plus.
