New Ecology, Inc. seeks candidates for the position of Director of Green Building Services in its Boston office. Reporting directly to New Ecology’s Vice President, the Director of Green Building Services works directly with property owners and real estate development teams to improve the performance, occupant health, resilience and durability of multifamily buildings; manages and mentors a team of Project Managers performing of this work; seeks out and develops new business opportunities and relationships and participates in management of the Green Building division.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The Director of Green Building Services leads a team of project managers who provide deep and diverse green building services to developers of multifamily housing. The Director maintains a modest set of projects for which they are the lead, while managing a team of project managers.
Project duties include project execution, managing client relations, team coordination and communication, project scheduling, oversight of technical resources, delivery of NEI’s work products and managing project budgets.

Specific project tasks may include:
  • leading design meetings to identify and target cost effective greening strategies;
  • attending project meetings and leading discussions on relevant sustainability issues;
  • developing energy efficiency and renewable energy strategies for new construction and renovation projects;
  • reviewing technical documents like building plans, specifications, and submittals to ensure that green design intent and certification requirements are incorporated and that green features are buildable;
  • educating team members on and facilitating, documenting, and tracking compliance with green building rating systems, such as Phius, LEED, Enterprise Green Communities, and Energy Star;
  • performing construction management responsibilities, including inspections, to ensure that projects are built as designed, that program requirements are met, and that problems are identified and resolved to the owner’s satisfaction;
  • conducting post-occupancy evaluations of projects to ensure they perform as intended;
  • securing grants and rebates for clients, including writing proposals, working with utility representatives, and filing rebate forms;
  • representing clients before government agencies in permitting and compliance discussions;
  • writing reports and case studies.
Supervisory duties include:
  • management of the team;
  • quality control of their work;
  • mentorship;
  • technical support;
  • managing workloads;
  • coordination with other NEI teams.
Specific supervisory tasks may include:
  • supervising a team of 3 to 5 staff members;
  • providing QA/QC oversight and review of project deliverables produced by Assistant to Senior level Project Managers;
  • working with staff on career development goals and opportunities;
  • managing timesheet submissions and reviews;
  • Understanding staff workload and monitoring for availability;
  • Forecasting and approving paid time off; and
  • Evaluating professional performance, soliciting and delivering constructive feedback, and completing the annual review process for direct reports.
Business Development responsibilities include:
  • developing and maintaining relationships with clients and prospects;
  • drafting proposals;
  • representing NEI at conferences.

The Managing Director of Green Building Services is expected to travel as needed to enable New Ecology to meet client deliverable expectations and develop business.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must have a technical knowledge of building systems and operations, green building approaches and best practices, and extensive experience in project management, coordination and implementation. Strong written and oral communication skills and a strong desire to work on energy efficiency and sustainability issues at the building level is required. The candidate should also possess strong customer communication skills.

The successful candidate will have:
  • Technical competence in reading and interpreting specifications and plans;
  • Experience in building science and net zero energy buildings,
  • Experience in and knowledge of HVAC systems and building codes;
  • Experience in and knowledge of multifamily buildings/building systems;
  • LEED accreditation and experience in actually certifying green building projects;
  • Construction management and field inspection abilities;
  • Graduate degree or equivalent experience.
  • Experience in managing staff career development and providing professional and technical mentorship

The candidate should be prepared for increased responsibility in a rapidly growing company and should be motivated to help build New Ecology’s reputation and services.

Schedule:
Full time, exempt, preferred. Regular travel to job sites and meetings and periodic out of state travel is expected. NEI has a hybrid work schedule with one to two days per week spent in our Boston office.
