POSITION: Director of Event Fundraising
REPORTS TO: Chief Development and Communications Officer

POSITION SUMMARY*
The Director of Event Fundraising is a senior member of the Development team and is responsible for overseeing all institutional relationships and corporate fundraising events for Thompson Island Outward Bound with a focus on strategic organizational growth. They will work closely with the Chief Development and Communications Officer (CDCO) and other senior leaders in the organization to continue to broaden the depth of our corporate and foundation relationships and increase the fundraising potential of the annual gala and trail run, while also developing new fundraising strategies around events and maximizing revenue potential from institutional donors.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES*

  • Institutional Donor Portfolio Management (50%)
  • Oversee all philanthropic institutional relationships for the organization, including corporate partnerships, event sponsors, private foundations, government funders and volunteer companies
  • Manage a portfolio of 200+ major institutional donors and prospects (giving $5,000 - $100,000 or more annually)
  • Work with Board Members, Committee Members, President, and CDCO to develop stewardship and solicitation plans for all major institutional donors and develop pipeline strategies for new institutional prospects. Ensure all plans are implemented in a timely manner and include other relevant staff and volunteers to maximize outcome.
  • Attend pipeline and major gift team meetings as needed
  • Oversee Foundation portfolio ensuring proposals and reports meet deadlines and stewardship plans are in place for all relationships
  • Ensure foundation proposal/report templates are kept up to date and reflect most recent organizational communications about mission, programs, impact, etc.
  • Drive Grants and Prospect Research Manager to find new prospects and develop deeper relationships within the foundation space to ensure continuous growth of overall program
  • Develop and own relationships in this portfolio that make sense based on the giving levels of the foundations
  • Oversee the Corporate Partnership Program, including the Corporate Volunteer Program
  • Manage corporate sponsorship benefits – develop benefit programs that appeal to the current market and ensure benefits align with organizational goals
  • Fundraising and Stewardship Events (30%)
  • Manage Development Events schedule, ensuring planning is executed in a timely manner, events schedule is manageable, and events are meeting and exceeding their financial and donor stewardship/prospecting goals
  • Oversee the implementation of key fundraising events including the annual Evening Expedition Gala, 4k Trail Run and Whiskey & Wine – while building new strategies to increase fundraising potential
  • Manage event committees year-round including recruiting new members, conducting meetings, solicitation support, and reporting
  • Develop event budgets with an intentional focus on securing in-kind donations and maintaining a strong fundraising/expense ratio – ensure fundraising events meet Net Revenue goals.
  • Oversee all communications related to events, including social media, invitations, e-communications, and other materials
  • Ensure that all appropriate event follow-ups and acknowledgements are completed, results are accurately recorded, and feedback regarding successes and needed improvements is sought out and used
  • Internally manage and drive a coordinated effort between all frontline fundraisers to maximize fundraising results for all events
  • Oversee all other fundraising and stewardship events, including but not limited to: the Boston Marathon team, Family Day, Islander’s Reception, etc.
  • Help identify new fundraising event ideas and assess viability.
  • Staff Management (15%)
  • Manage three staff, including the Senior Corporate Partnership Manager, Development Events Manager, and Foundation & Prospect Research Manager
  • Additional Duties (5%)
  • Provide input to Nominating Committee on prospective Board members from current portfolio
  • Overall responsibility for accurate and timely reporting to Board, CDCO and other senior leadership in all areas of responsibility
  • Other duties or projects as assigned by the CDCO or CEO

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent experience
  • Minimum 10 years of proven success in fundraising and specifically with institutional donors
  • Government or public funding experience preferred
  • Experience with employee management
  • Strong written and verbal communications skills
  • Creativity and sense of humor
  • Strong Raiser’s Edge database or similar CRM system skills
  • Excellent computer skills including Microsoft Word, Excel, PPT, and Google Sheets
  • Strong grasp of budgeting specific to event management
  • Flexibility - proven ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Ability to handle highly confidential organizational information professionally

This position is full-time. Due to COVID-19 workplace safety guidelines, most employees are working remotely, a hybrid return to the office is planned for 2022, and when it is safe this position will be full-time out of the Drydock offices.
