Director of Building and Safety (At-Will)
Salary: $9,599 to $13,370 per month Opens: August 10, 2022

ABOUT THE POSITION:
The City of Hawthorne is recruiting for a Director of Building and Safety. This classification
will be responsible for the enforcement of all regulatory codes pertaining to building and
insures that all construction, existing and proposed, meet the requirements of applicable
zoning, building, housing, planning, plumbing, electrical and structural standards as they
pertain to City Ordinances and State laws. The incumbent participates in plan checking
activities and performs complex structural engineering plan checking for commercial,
industrial and residential construction, and equipment installation.
The City is seeking a strong innovator, communicator, collaborator, and leader who can
effectively interact with members of the community, staff, and City Council. The candidate
will be able to supervise and perform general plan checking of plans, specifications, and
computations submitted in connection with applications for private development. The
candidate will perform complex plan check duties associated with commercial and
industrial construction plans to insure compliance with code and related structural
engineering requirements and enforce laws, codes and ordinances dealing with the
construction of new buildings and the alteration and safety of existing building.
A successful incumbent will evaluate the department’s efficiency and effectiveness with
processes and procedures to make appropriate changes for enhanced customer service.

QUALIFICATIONS:
· Bachelor’s degree in Civil or Structural · Six (6) years of management experience.
Engineering.

  • A master’s degree is highly desired.

· Eight (8) years of progressive · Registration as a Professional Civil
responsible work experience in design Engineer in the State of California, ICBO
or review of building construction plans, certification as a Plans Examiner
structural or civil engineering plan
checking.
