Brief Description of PSU/School/Dept
The School of Music & Theater is located in the Portland cultural district, home of the Oregon Symphony, the Portland Opera, the Portland Center for the Performing Arts, the Portland Art Museum, and the Northwest Film Center. It maintains close ties with the major musical institutions of the city, and students have many opportunities to interact with professionals in the community. Position Summary
  • The successful candidate will be the conductor of our wind ensembles including the acclaimed Portland State Wind Symphony which appears regularly at professional conferences throughout the Northwest, and other University concert bands. They will demonstrate a high standard of musicianship as a conductor and ensemble director.
  • They will develop and maintain relations with public school ensemble directors for the purposes of recruitment, and pursue community outreach.
  • They will work with the instrumental applied faculty to recruit Instrumental Performance and Music Education majors as well as non-music major members for the concert bands.
  • The successful candidate will have a firm foundation in Public School Instrumental Music Education in the United States.
  • They will be well aware of the current best practices in the field of Instrumental Music Education.
  • They will teach instrumental conducting classes and instrumental methods classes for a large cohort of skilled Music Education majors.
  • The successful candidate will be looking toward the future of innovation and social justice in the field of music, especially in providing access to public music education in marginalized communities and diversity and representation in repertoire.

The Professor of Practice is a Non-Tenure Track (NTT) Instructional appointment that prioritizes instruction, and provides a pathway to continuous appointment following a probation period. Minimum Qualifications
  • Master’s Degree (MM, MA, MEd)
  • A proven record of public school teaching and band conducting experience (minimum of 5 years)
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills

Preferred Qualifications
  • Teaching experience with a variety of age groups
  • Teaching experience in under served communities
  • Experience with anti-racist educational pedagogy

Total Compensation Range & Benefits Statement
PSU has a structured process for determining starting compensation, taking into account years of related experience, applicable skills, knowledge and abilities, market parity, and internal equity. The starting annual salary for this position will be $63,873 but may be negotiated above this rate dependent upon the factors above, the budget of the hiring department, and approval from HR.
