General Job Description*

The Director of Accounting will lead the accounting department, developing a robust and competent team while working closely with other business leaders at MPR. This individual will be disciplined and rigorous in the management of MPR’s books while also having a forward-looking view that enables MPR to adapt to future business needs and opportunities. This is a full-time, exempt position in MPR’s Alexandria, VA office.
Duties/Responsibilities:The Director of Accounting will be primarily responsible for:

  • Leadership of the accounting team which includes defining a structure for the team, hiring, developing and mentoring of staff, and providing day-to-day management of department responsibilities.
  • Direct supervision of selected members of the department to include providing daily and weekly guidance, providing direct feedback on performance, and writing annual reviews.
  • Leadership of the department to include developing a long-term vision and strategy, identifying future requirements and risks to the department, selection of tools, development and documentation of processes and procedures, and monitoring to ensure compliance.
  • Interfacing with business division leaders to understand special needs and demands, and to find and implement solutions to address their needs.
  • Management of relationships with key vendors including MPR’s bank, outside accounting and auditing firm, the financial management software firm, and other specialized accounting consultants.
  • Acting as controller for MPR Associates Inc. and other related subsidiaries including maintenance of General Ledger and review of all postings.
  • Backup responsibility of all other department functions including accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, cash forecasting, and project accounting responsibilities.
  • Serving as the technical expert on MPR’s accounting software, Deltek Vision, providing support to other employees and contacting Deltek’s customer support when needed to resolve issues.
  • Preparation of year-end books and reports for audit.
  • Development, preparation and presentation of key business reporting and metrics to company leadership.
  • Development, preparation and presentation of Pro Forma business model and other related forecasting tools to facilitate effective business decisions.
  • Maintenance of business licenses and fulfills other compliance items.

Qualifications:

  • U.S. citizenship is required.

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in Accounting (preferred) or a related field.
  • CPA required.

Experience

  • Fifteen (15) years of experience in business accounting preferred.
  • Five (5) years of supervisory experience preferred.
  • Experience working in a professional services firm preferred.
  • Experience working with an enterprise accounting software system. Experience with Deltek Vision is preferred.

Skills
The successful candidate will have the ability to:

  • Lead others in completing tasks and help others develop increased competency and performance.
  • Implement a general ledger, structure and reconcile accounts, and prepare statements.
  • Understand and interpret federal pass-through tax rules (S-Corp) and have a strong knowledge of cash basis and accrual basis accounting.
  • Understand state tax rules related to nexus and have experience registering in new states for payroll, unemployment and income taxes.
  • Process payroll and timesheets for salary and hourly employees.
  • Summarize and present financial information to both financial and non-financial audiences.
  • Communicate effectively orally and in writing with business leaders and ensure that efforts that respond to their needs satisfy requirements.
  • Identify and implement solutions to problems or challenges.
  • Be personally accountable and respectfully hold others accountable.
  • Apply a strong understanding of accounting fundamentals and of accounting standards including GAAP and relevant FASB standards, as well as state, county and city revenue and other reporting requirements in various jurisdictions.
  • Persistent, and has a questioning attitude and the ability to accept that in others.
