Van Ness Feldman, LLP, a mid-sized Georgetown law firm that specializes in energy, natural resources, environmental and transportation policy is seeking a Director, Governmental Issues to assist the firm’s various practice areas with research, analysis and advocacy pertaining to public policy in the Legislative and Executive Branch. This includes, but is not limited to, monitoring developments and daily trade reports in issue areas that include: climate change, energy technologies, environment, natural resources, transportation, infrastructure and the federal budget.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Client Needs: Participate in team efforts to meet client needs including, but not limited to, sharing timely information, participating in client calls, editing documents and taking notes at various events. Additionally, this person is responsible for the following tasks:

  • Communicate directly with clients as appropriate
  • Analyze and summarize legislation pertaining to energy, environmental, budget, appropriations and other client issues
  • Prepare memoranda and reports on congressional hearings and legislative mark-ups
  • Identify and monitor key campaign races based on individual client interests
  • Draft lobby materials and other advocacy tools to distribute to congressional staff
  • Structure, develop and execute educational briefings for Congressional staff

External Outreach: Build, maintain and strengthen relationships with staff on Capitol Hill and in the Administration. Additional outreach expectations include:

  • Participate in various briefings on subject matter pertinent to issue areas noted above
  • Attend (in person or virtually) fundraising or political events as needed

Support Practice Needs: Participate in various Public Policy Practice meetings, coordinate and support the sharing of information among colleagues. Additional supportive tasks include:

  • Craft first drafts and coordinate team writing of marketing materials including Alerts and Updates related to policy activity (see examples here: https://www.vnf.com/resource-center)
  • Coordinate with others to update tracking documents focused on legislation, regulatory action and other matters of significance to the practice.

Candidate must have a Bachelor’s degree; work experience on or with Capitol Hill encouraged. This position will be based in the Washington, DC office.
