We aim to achieve positive outcomes for children and young people through research-based programming, partnerships with educators, communities, and community-based organizations. In particular, we are guided by an equity compass and seek to respond to specific community needs, include communities in the development of media and educational initiatives, and represent diverse people and stories throughout. We serve educators and learners in both in-school (prek-12) and out-of-school (informal) settings, and are co-leads of

), public media’s national, free service of digital learning resources that is typically accessed by over a million users a month.
JOB OVERVIEW
GBH Education seeks an experienced education professional to lead strategic development. Reporting to the Executive Director of Education, the Director of Education Development will be a key partner to program leads in conceptualizing and researching new projects, identifying appropriate partners, and developing financial and other support for initiatives aimed at equitable learning for underserved populations in particular. The Director of Education Development must be able to toggle between vision and the big picture on the one hand, and attention to detail and minutia, on the other. The ideal candidate will also possess content knowledge in one of our primary education strands (science, STEM or social studies), and be an easy-going collaborator across multiple functions and departments, who can nevertheless take initiative and lead as necessary, delivering the highest levels of quality.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Working closely with internal and external stakeholders, the Director of Education Development will:
  • Conduct background research, literature reviews, partner outreach, and other due diligence to aid project development
  • Research, write, and promote concept papers, proposals, pitches
  • Manage development planning, proposal development process, and develop systems and processes for project development and tracking
  • Track government grant cycles (NSF, Department of Education, NASA, NEH, IMLS, etc.)
  • Work with GBH Development team members to curate, track, cultivate, and develop philanthropic sources of support
  • Partner in business development strategy and activities - including landscape/competitive analyses, goal and market definition, product ideation, revenue model creation, and outlining measures of success
  • Plan and coordinate strategic communication efforts about the Department's work to various partner and funder audiences
  • Monitor and communicate current policy, practice, and digital learning trends in schools and other educational settings
  • Partner in overall department strategy, with a focus on equity and impact
  • Serve as a spokesperson and ambassador for the department in external venues
  • Support grant submission efforts for the division (Children's Media and Education) as a whole, when needed
  • Support the Executive Director on other projects, as assigned
SKILL SET
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to present ideas effectively and persuasively, both in writing and speaking
  • Strong grant-writing skills; facility with other types of writing (academic, storytelling, blogging, etc.)
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a collaborative team
  • Sensitivity to a diverse range of peers and ability to troubleshoot challenges that may arise

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
  • Bachelor's degree required; advanced degree in Education or related field strongly preferred.
  • Five to ten years fundraising and project management experience
  • Deep familiarity with project/proposal development processes; evidence of successful grant submissions
  • Significant knowledge of and experience with government agencies (e.g., Department of Education, NSF, NASA, NOAA, Mass DESE, School Districts, etc.)
  • Experience with philanthropy
  • Direct experience in education, education-adjacent, or social impact fields, ideally with special focus on equity
  • Savvy regarding educational technologies/media
  • Basic knowledge of education research and formative research/product testing, or content knowledge in one of these areas: science/STEM, history/social studies/civic engagement
