The Blueprint (Role Profile)

A key leader in the Marketing team, the Director, Brand Marketing is accountable for delivering brand(s) &/or category(ies) P&L results. Primary responsibilities include building brand equity and category leadership through distribution/penetration expansion and increased user demand, as well as driving revenue and positive ROI for marketing activities. The Director, Brand Marketing is an expert in the market, brand, popular media platforms and user preferences, and leads a cross-functional team to deliver brand strategy, and activation. They are responsible for attracting, developing, and retaining marketing talent across the business.

The Build (Responsibilities)

Organization and Talent Management:

  • Manages the brand marketing team, including setting clear objectives and initiatives, assigning projects, and providing coaching and feedback to build competency and develop skills. Participates in product management recruiting events and interviews.


Insights:

  • Recommends changes to strategies and priorities based on external data and trends, including macroeconomic data, market and category trends, competitive information, customer insights, as well as formal and informal research.


Brand Strategy:

  • Recommends the brand’s integrated marketing plan, ensuring it aligns with the strategic goals set by leadership; this includes global branding hierarchy, including role of sub-brand(s) and endorsed brand(s), agreeing to global brand style guides inclusive of reviewing key product, pack and marketing assets for consistency with brand(s) style guide.

Innovation and Product Portfolio Management:

  • Recommends brand &/or category innovation strategy, including role of sustaining and breakthrough innovation, new categories, and new market spaces, while agreeing with product portfolio expansion and price positioning, ensuring it supports brand strategy. Presents global and regional targets for post-launch success metrics and secures leadership approval. Monitors results and builds findings into strategies and plans.


Trade Management:

  • Partners with Channel Marketing to recommend inputs to long-term channel/customer strategies that align with brand strategy and financial targets while recommending distribution/penetration goals for annual plans and new product launches.

Activation:

  • Leads annual planning process for brand &/or category to set a fully integrated marketing plan and programming, including completion of annual situation assessments. Recommends priorities, A&P budget and marketing calendar for upcoming year drawn from business implications.
  • Identifies potential brand sponsorship activities based on user insights. Negotiates contacts and acts as point of contact throughout sponsorship agreement.
  • Helps manage overall agency relationships. Secures leadership approval of external-facing communication.
  • Delivers brand(s) &/or category P&L results. Identifies financial risks and opportunities, including contingency planning to fill identified gaps between projected performance and target. Secures leadership approval for incremental programming as needed.


The Toolbox (Qualifications)

  • 10+ years of marketing and management work experience, with a sound business acumen and strong global marketing orientation including E-commerce and digital marketing experience
  • A proven leader who is able to effectively manage and develop people, , while being able to dive into the details and act as a team player
  • Effective communicator with the ability to influence and present at senior level and represent the company in a professional manner in all types of business situations
  • Four-year college degree or equivalent experience is required
  • Industrial/Home Improvement or consumer packaged goods experience preferred
  • Demonstrated success in translating marketing objectives into strategies and plans. Has led a team to develop a comprehensive annual marketing and trade plans that are integrated across touchpoints, including point-of-purchase.
  • Experience managing outside agency relationships and projects
  • Ability to travel overnight approximately 1-2 times per month
