About the Opportunity
The Institute for Experiential AI (IEAI) is built around the challenges and opportunities made possible by human-machine collaboration. The institute provides a framework to design, implement, and scale AI-driven technologies in ways that make a true difference to society. Our ability to respond to the opportunities afforded to society will depend on training and building a workforce that is AI-capable. Located in Portland, Maine, with the goal of growing the Maine tech economy, the Roux Institute will be a center of activity for the Institute’s efforts.
The Opportunity:
The Director, AI Solutions Hub is a senior leader role that will shape an innovative project delivery model that maintains strong industry focus within a leading academic institution. The AI Solutions Hub is a critical offering of the Institute that will leverage data science and AI capabilities at the Institute and across the University to solve the most challenging AI problems in the world. The focus is on addressing real problems with real constraints, deadlines, and issues of deployment – including data quality, reliability, trustworthiness, etc. We believe these types of projects provide visibility into a relevant research agenda as well as an opportunity to offer students, co-ops, and learners the opportunity to gain experiential education in the context of working closely with companies and partner organizations on what it takes to make AI/Data Science work in real contexts.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Masters or PhD degree in Statistics, Operations Research, Mathematics, Physics, Computer Science, or Engineering, or in a related field
  • Prior leadership positions in a global business or consulting enterprise overseeing projects and initiatives in the areas of data science and machine learning
  • Entrepreneurial approach to sourcing, growing, and strategically directing projects and solutions to problems with high economic or scientific impact.
  • Experience in directly managing data science teams, technical AI and data engineering resources and relevant technology stack familiarity
  • 15+ years of experience in developing and delivering data related projects and products
  • In-depth understanding of data science and AI, and their application areas and impact on multiple domains and industries
  • Ability to communicate, lead and manage effectively across academica and industry.
  • Ability to act both as a leader and mentor to technical talent
  • Ability to manage a variety of stakeholder groups, engage with senior audiences with strong storytelling skills including working with corporate leadership or boards, research faculty and research scientists, as well as students.
  • Experience with lifelong learning and upskilling programs strongly preferred
  • Exceptional organizational skills including attention to detail, the ability to multi-task, and prioritization of time and duties
  • Strong problem-solving ability, including metrics-driven thinking
  • Ability to translate experiences in developing solutions into an academic research agenda and ability to communicate effectively with research leadership and collaborate on an research agenda
  • Experience leading sales and business development efforts in the AI/DS spaces strongly preferred
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES & ACCOUNTABILITIES
1) Lead a team of staff data scientists and data engineers as well as consultants/project managers to deliver projects in AI to clients across a wide variety of industries
2) Work with faculty, researchers and other functions at the Institute to develop research agenda and new research directions related to applied AI; develop AI products to serve the emerging needs of organizations in areas such as Responsible AI, healthcare, life sciences and sustainability
3) Oversee the continuous development of data infrastructure and related tools and technologies in AI to serve the needs of the Institute and AI faculty at the University
4) Support the Business Development team to scope opportunities and develop solutions
5) Work with the educational groups at the Institute and academic units at the University to deliver practicum courses as part of projects, giving learners the opportunity to work with real data on real world problems
