Position Summary

The role of a Directional Bore Locator includes operating horizontal/directional drill rigs, locating equipment and product support equipment. Perform semi-skilled activities related to HDD locating along with familiarity with industry standards, policies, guidelines, and procedures.

*Position is located Great Falls, MT. Must either be local, willing to travel or relocate.

Compensation

  • Up to $30.00 per hour DOE
  • Daily Per Diem pay for non-residents

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Operates Horizontal Directional Drill Locator for installation of underground telecommunications cable conduit, including fiber optic cable.
  • Confirm bore path with install foreman and drill operator (including walking the bore path).
  • Perform job site analysis (JSA) including completion of paperwork.
  • Ensure there are proper clearances to install the product per standards.
  • Record the depth of the tool head as required.
  • Ensure the drill head is in a good position at the exit pit to connect the product.
  • Locate telecom utilities with either Digi-Track or Subsite locating systems.
  • Ability to work in fast paced environment.
  • Ability to work safely and with or without direct supervision.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
  • Traveling 80% of the time.

Other Education, Responsibilities and Qualifications

  • Experience with locating & verifying all utilities before construction.
  • At a minimum, the position requires a good working knowledge of telecommunications construction; familiarity with Horizontal Directional Drills, ability to use cable placement equipment and tools.
  • Ability to identify and troubleshoot problems.
  • Individuals must be able to read prints and have knowledge of the underground processes.
  • Must have valid Driver’s License, CDL a plus

  • Must be able to bend, stoop, squat, crawl, climb, kneel, balance, push, pull and reach overhead.
  • Lift or move up to 75 pounds. Constantly move about on the feet.
  • Climb ladders of all types.
  • Complete full day assignments involving overhead work.
  • Must be able to make transition from employee parking area or street into construction work areas and to access all levels of the building, even if the only means of access is by O.S.H.A. approved site construction ladder or stairs still under construction, but acceptable for use.
  • Must be capable of securing tools and materials from storage areas to complete assigned tasks.
  • Possess good vision, normal or corrected.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
  • Possess good hearing, normal or corrected.
  • Must be able to positively identify different colors of wiring, conduit and fiber optics.
  • Wear personal protective equipment (hard hat, safety glasses, safety vest) at all times.
  • Must be able to work 8 hours a day, 40 hours per week, and overtime as required.
  • This position requires flexible work hours. In order to get a project completed on time, this position may be required to work overtime, weekends.

Must be able to work in the presence of customers and their representatives with little or no interference or disruption to the customer while maintaining a professional and courteous image.
