Our Optical Communications segment has recently evolved from being a manufacturer of optical fiber and cable, hardware and equipment to being a comprehensive provider of industry-leading optical solutions across the broader communications industry.This segment is classified into two main product groupings – carrier network and enterprise network. The carrier network product group consists primarily of products and solutions for optical-based communications infrastructure for services such as video, data and voice communications. The enterprise network product group consists primarily of optical-based communication networks sold to businesses, governments and individuals for their own use.

Scope of Position: The successful candidate will be responsible for working with members of the OFC Technology Organization to gain valuable hands-on experience, including project and process activities while completing an Associates Degree in Mechanical Engineering Technology, Electrical Engineering Technology or Mechatronics Engineering Technology.

Day to Day Responsibilities:

• Full-time enrollment and attendance in either two year Mechanical Engineering Technology, Electrical Engineering Technology or Mechatronics Engineering Technology curriculum of study
• Learn to apply the 5S Lean Manufacturing concepts to the work/storage area for the department.
• Certification to drive a forklift/walkie.
• Assist the development team with process troubleshooting, debug and transfer to manufacturing from a mechanical, controls and electrical perspective.
• Learn basic hand tool techniques to install stands, tools, etc.
• Measure process and product parameters and input these into MS Excel for the team.
• Learn how to operate a variety of manufacturing lines and pieces of equipment such as extruders (including crossheads), take-ups, payoffs, water troughs, capstans, etc.
• Work will occur at HMTC and occasional daily assignments in Trivium, Newton and Winston-Salem Plants may also be required.
• Apply learnings from the Mechanical Engineering Technology degree program that is in progress such as controls programming, electrical wiring of equipment and CAD drawings/design.
• Capture new ideas for possible patent submission.

Travel Requirements: Minimal OFC Cable Manufacturing sites in NC (Hickory, Trivium, Newton, Winston-Salem)

Hours of Work/Schedule: 40 hours/week – total hours in classroom and onsite (this position does not support overtime)

Required Years and Areas of Experience:

• High School Diploma or GED Equivalent
• Enrollment in either a Mechanical Engineering Technology, Electrical Engineering Technology or Mechatronics Engineering Technology program of study upon acceptance of position
• Minimum of 6 months in Corning Cable Manufacturing environment operating cabling lines
