What You Will Do

Physics Division is seeking outstanding candidates for the half-time position of Deputy Group Leader (DGL) in the Nuclear and Particle Physics and Applications Group (P-3). The group carries out basic and applied research at LANSCE and other accelerator facilities around the world in the areas of fundamental symmetries, heavy ion research, nucleon structure physics, and nuclear data. We oversee the LANSCE Ultracold Neutron (UCN) facility and have a wide-ranging nuclear physics program at the LANSCE Lujan and WNR facilities. P-3 is currently comprised of approximately 45 permanent staff, post-docs and students, in addition to a large fluctuating student and visiting scientist population.

The successful candidate will support the Group's strategic and tactical planning directed toward maintaining and achieving the long-range Group vision and mission. They will help in development of the group's strategic plan, developing programs, promoting effective partnering with other LANL and outside organizations, oversight of group finances, human resource management, and safety & security management. This is nominally a half-time role so the successful candidate will also be expected to perform research in one or more areas aligned with the Group's portfolio for the other half of their time.

Minimum Job Requirements:
  • Record of successful research in a scientific field relevant to at least one of the Group's core research areas or programs, as demonstrated by published articles or project reports.
  • Capability in program development and demonstrated scientific and organizational leadership as evidenced by the ability to form, organize, administer, and lead scientific projects, teams.
  • Demonstrated commitment to the professional development and mentoring of employees with dedication to quality and diversity in the workplace.
  • Experience in recruitment and hiring processes.
  • Financial management skills and commitment to good business practices as demonstrated by performance and accomplishments in previous work assignments.
  • Record of effective written and verbal communication skills, as evidenced by application materials, letters of reference, interactions with colleagues both inside and outside the Lab, and by seminars, briefings, presentations, and publications.
  • Record of commitment to safety and security in the workplace.

Education/Experience Required: This position requires a minimum of a Bachelor's Degree and 5 years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. A Ph.D. is preferred.

Desired Qualifications:
  • Familiarity with P-3 LANSCE facilities (Lujan, WNR, UCN) and/or the management of comparable experimental facilities.
  • Demonstrated ability to build productive partnerships and new programs with other groups at Los Alamos.
  • Good working knowledge of laboratory financial, management, and ES&H practices.
  • Demonstrated ability to successfully interact with Laboratory management
  • Familiarity with Laboratory administrative policies and procedures.

Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. Additional Details

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2. No Clearance: Position does not require a security clearance. Selected candidates will be subject to drug testing and other pre-employment background checks.
