This editor is responsible for overseeing daily and enterprise real estate coverage across platforms. This is a key topic for our newsroom — and our audience — that stretches well beyond coverage of buying and selling on Long Island. We’re looking for an editor to coach our team to capture living arrangements traditional and not — from trading up to sizing down, moving in or priced out. This is a hybrid editing role working closely with colleagues from both the Business and XLI desks to deliver coverage that engages, surprises and informs.

Essential Duties & Functions

• Assign and edit weekly real estate coverage from staffers and freelancers, plus breaking news from the beat reporter.
• Encourage alternative storytelling approaches as well as opportunities to visualize data and flag compelling video opportunities.
• Responsible for coordinating visuals, writing headlines and stewarding coverage through all aspects of digital and print publication.
• Direct the team’s enterprise coverage with an eye toward growing our audience. From brainstorming fresh ideas to diversifying sources, we must deliver stories that are relevant, and give context to local real estate/living trends. The team’s planning budget maintains a minimum of two months’ work in progress.
• Collaborate with colleagues across print, digital and video to optimize content to each platform. This involves coordinating video/photo shoots, delivering digital-first content and proofreading print edition pages.

Essential Job Knowledge & Skills

• 3+ years of editing/assigning experience and/or 5+ years of reporting experience.
• Excellent verbal and written communication, planning and multi-tasking skills.
• The editor should be comfortable leading biweekly team meetings and representing the group’s work at other newsroom planning sessions.
• Familiarity with Newsday reader/subscriber digital trends, metrics software programs and SEO optimization is a plus.
• Familiar with or willing to become familiar with real estate industry standards, practices and trends.
• Ability to work a flexible and varied schedule to include weekends, holidays and extended hours as needed to support newsroom needs.

Compensation

• The annual salary range for this role is $115,000 - $117,875, commensurate with experience.
