POSITION TITLE: Dean of Behavioral & Social Science and Education

DEPARTMENT: Academic Affairs

REPORTS TO: Vice President for Academic Affairs

POSITIONS SUPERVISED: Assigned unit and non-unit professional staff and faculty.

STATEMENT OF DUTIES:

The Dean provides senior-level vision, leadership and administrative direction for Behavioral & Social Science and Education. They provide oversight for all programs within the area; including, but not limited to, Behavioral and Social Sciences, Criminal Justice, DDS, Education, History, Government, Economics, Gerontology, Human Services, Paralegal and Legal Studies, Psychology, Sociology, Substance Abuse Counseling, Thanatology, and the Race and Gender Certificate. The Dean fosters growth, development, and assessment of curricula for each of these programs to meet transfer and workforce needs. The Dean also oversees grants and special programs in the Area including the Developmental Disabilities Services grant program, Early Education and Care Pathways grant, Massachusetts Delivery System Reform Incentive Payment (DSRIP) program, Perkins grant, and the Bristol Community College Holocaust and Genocide Center, a unique collection providing educational and cultural events to the region to memorialize the atrocities committed against people by genocides throughout history.

As a core member of the Vice President's leadership team, the Dean ensures management and administrative oversight of all programs, services, staffing and budgeting related to this area, with an emphasis on its growth and revitalization. They also build partnerships with regional businesses and organizations to foster a college-going culture, as well as address community needs. The Dean leads strategic planning for the area and fosters innovation consistent with college strategic goals; diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives; and the equity agenda. The Dean works collaboratively across the college to ensure shared governance, transparency and assessment practices while helping to move the college towards comprehensive, innovative solutions to meet the evolving needs of the Bristol community.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS, DUTIES, AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Leadership

  • Foster a student-centered educational environment responsive to diverse learner needs, utilizing high impact practices.
  • Collaborate with key colleagues to advance the college's recruitment and retention efforts of students within the academic area.
  • Hire, supervise, develop and lead all assigned faculty and staff. Conduct regular performance evaluations to ensure continuous improvement and identify potential opportunities for growth. Work closely with Human Resources to develop staff capabilities and expectations.
  • Promote a positive and inclusive work environment that supports the professional growth of faculty and staff while fostering a commitment to service excellence.
  • Collaborate with the college's academic and campus deans as well as key leaders from Student Services and Enrollment Management to determine program offerings and class schedules, as well as key academic and student support services.
  • Focus on the Commonwealth's Equity Agenda by applying related best practices throughout all job functions; and exhibit a commitment to the recruitment and retention of a diverse workforce.
  • Foster relationships with area schools, institutions of higher education, community-based organizations, businesses and community leaders to develop linkages and collaborative programs to develop school-to-career opportunities.
  • Develop relationships with K-12 partners for the transfer of students, grant-related activities, and establishing Early College initiatives.
  • Collaborate with the Business Solutions and Partnerships area to schedule appropriate non-credit offerings.
  • Collaborate with Marketing and Communications to ensure appropriate branding and marketing of programs and events to students and the community.
  • Maintain responsiveness to a wide array of campus-related issues involving students, faculty and building maintenance.
  • Collaborate with the Bristol Foundation and Office of Grant Development to develop opportunities, write grant proposals, acquire scholarships and promote events that support the area.

Administration

  • Develop and oversee staff scheduling to ensure adequate coverage during college hours of operation.
  • Represent the college at key events and through selected committees and working groups throughout the region; present to committees and groups as necessary.
  • Analyze relevant data to track and report on needs and outcomes.
  • Develop and manage the operating budget and fiscal expenditures for the area.
  • Oversee grant-funded initiatives, including the maintenance of accountability to funding agencies.
  • Attend all college meetings and events, serve on assigned committees/councils, and participate as a member of the Academic Vice President's Leadership Team.
  • Use Bristol's digital communication tools, to include but not limited to; Bristol email, Twitter, LinkedIn, and other Bristol social media tools, to advance the college's social media outreach and brand to internal and external constituents.
  • Develop and facilitate presentations internally and externally.
  • Administer applicable collective bargaining agreements.
  • Assign courses to both full-time faculty and adjunct faculty; oversee course scheduling and make changes as needed.
  • Supervise and ensure that instruction and delivery of material for courses in the area, at all Bristol locations and/or online, meet the required course descriptions and the intended learning outcomes.
  • Make recommendations for appointment, promotion, tenure, reappointment, sabbatical leave and other personnel actions within the academic area.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Job Requirements:


EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Minimum of a master's degree in higher education or a content area within the Area.
  • Minimum of five (5) years of college administration experience in the areas of supervision, budgeting, academic program development and/or student and academic support services.
  • Minimum of one (1) year teaching experience in the Behavioral and Social Sciences or related field at a community college or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Robust understanding and demonstrated the inclusion of best practices focused on access, equity, student success, and high impact practices.
  • Progressive leadership roles in higher education that demonstrate meeting established goals which provided technological, collaborative and innovative solutions.
  • Demonstrated understanding of and commitment to the goals and values of a community college and/or institutions of higher education.
  • Demonstrated proficiency with higher education technology, such as Banner, Blackboard, Argos, etc.
  • Demonstrated proficiency with Microsoft Office 365 applications (Outlook, Word, Excel, etc).
  • Demonstrated managerial experience leading a diverse faculty and staff with competing needs.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Demonstrated experience making presentations before diverse audiences.
  • Demonstrated commitment to fostering and supporting educational opportunity for diverse ethnic, social, and economic populations and in an urban campus environment.
  • The ability to work effectively with a diverse student body, faculty, and staff.
  • Reliable transportation in order to travel to and from meetings, trainings, or campus and community locations as required.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Doctorate in Higher Education or a related field.
  • Five years of supervisory experience of a diverse staff in a unionized environment.
  • Experience with language or cultural centers, and/or developmental English co-requisite models.
  • Familiarity with program assessment tools and processes, accreditation procedures, evaluation, and quality enhancement.
  • Proven track record developing, organizing, successfully implementing, and managing new initiatives.
  • Demonstrated experience with collection, analysis, and interpretation of data to inform and support decisions.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and consistent experience in using varied social media outlets on behalf of a business or organization that has proven to increase the digital footprint of the organization's brand.
  • Ability to speak a language in addition to English.
