“Literacy is the vaccine for poverty” (Dr. Stephen G. Peters, past president of International Literacy Association). Delaware Libraries is collaborating with other stakeholders in the Council of Excellence to address all types of literacy: health, financial, digital, environmental, and more. As our Literary VISTA, you will look at the resources and research already collected to have a better understanding of Delaware’s gaps and strengths. Next step, take the knowledge and apply it to the literacy projects the libraries are already involved in and maybe start a project that captured your passion while reading the research.
Member Duties : Delaware Libraries have been researching successful national literacy programs and approaches for over a year and now you will have the opportunity to apply this information to current literacy efforts in Delaware. Attend the Communities of Excellence (COE) literacy collaborative. Develop partnerships and encourage volunteers to help with literacy programming in public libraries. Develop an awareness campaign to inform library staff and library partners to be cognizant of those seeking computer help and asking for essential needs help might be low-level readers. Recruit and train volunteers to assist in literacy initiatives.
