CREAMERY TECHNICIAN – JORDAN COLLEGE OF AGRICULTURAL SCIENCES & TECHNOLOGY

POSITION SUMMARY:

Full-time, benefited position with the Jordan College of Agricultural Sciences and Technology through the California State University, Fresno Foundation. Under the direction of the Creamery Manager, the Creamery Technician will be responsible for processing cheese, ice cream, yogurt; operating dairy processing machinery; packing and boxing finished dairy products for storage and sales; and facility cleaning and sanitation. The job requires working with undergraduate and graduate students during lab instruction and/or applied research projects as well as dairy processing industry professionals in training and research scenarios.

This position is designed to support current and expanding capacity within the Fresno State Creamery Pilot Plant to teach/train the current and next generation of dairy processing technicians, managers, and entrepreneurs in the production of value-added dairy products as well as have/develop expertise in using existing and new equipment.

This is a grant funded position for which there are four years of funding available. Continuation of the position both year-to-year as well as beyond the life of the grant will be subject to availability of funds and satisfactory performance.

ESSENTIAL JOB

FUNCTIONS:

The responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to:

  • Process raw milk into cheese, ice cream mix, ice cream, and yogurt in compliance with food and CAL-OSHA safety standards
  • Monitor cheese in aging rooms
  • Maintain accurate records of production, maintenance and product distribution
  • Prepare products for distribution
  • Work in a clean organized manner
  • Perform one or more packaging functions such as boxing, and running a bottling line

· Other duties as assigned

QUALIFICATIONS

& EXPERIENCE:

Required Qualifications:

· Associate’s degree (A.A.) or equivalent from a two (2) year college or technical school

· Minimum of six (6) months of manufacturing experience

· Knowledge of various pieces of food processing equipment

· Basic computer skills.

· Ability to read, write, comprehend, follow verbal and written instructions and possess basic mathematical skills

· Ability to travel as required by the position

  • There may be regional travel to deliver products on a weekly basis.
  • There may be occasional travel within the western USA (primarily within California) for professional development to workshops or conferences.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Two (2) or more years of continuous prior experience in any facet of dairy processing industry
  • Experience supervising students/co-workers
  • Self-Reliant and able to accurately work under limited supervision
  • Able to troubleshoot mechanical problems
  • Communicates work order progress to supervisor
  • Able to work in a collaborative team
  • Ability to be flexible in work performed and schedule
  • Ability to follow manufacturer’s specifications and directions
  • Able to work in a fast-paced environment
  • Work in cold and/or hot temperatures throughout the day
  • Adhere to all standard operating procedures (SOPs)
  • Ensures a safe working environment while performing assigned tasks
  • Ability to maintain professional and collaborate working relationships with a diverse population of colleagues, administrators, faculty, staff, students, community, and the ag industry
  • Reception and pasteurization certification or willingness to get certified within the first six months of employment
  • Spanish language skills (speaking, writing, reading, presenting)

SALARY/BENEFITS:

$4,583.33 per month. Benefits include medical, dental, vision, life insurance, 401(k), vacation, sick and holiday pay.
