Senior Counselor at Outdoor Adventure and Mythology Summer Day Camp for Girls

Title: Counselor

Employment Status: Exempt/Seasonal

Company Summary:

Plato Learning operates outdoor mythology-based day camps for kids ages 7-15. We create a world where monsters, myth, and magic transport kids out of the mortal realm into one where they are empowered to develop new skills, take risks, solve problems, and ultimately become Heroes. With sixteen locations spanning from NYC to California, Plato Learning uses actors, live-action role-play, and physically and mentally engaging activities to bring myths to life.

Daring Girls: Adventures in Mythology is our all-female program where girls become their own heroes. Daring Girls explore nature, build confidence, and discover powerful historical women, and mythological goddesses. From the outside, Daring Girls are tumbling, sword-fighting, and building strange contraptions with wire and tubes (you know, girl stuff). But on the inside, our young women are learning to take risks, fail with grace, and never give up.

Discover the Heroine Within. We Dare You to Join Us!

Job Summary:

We are hiring energetic and creative leaders to serve as camp counselors at Daring Girls. Counselors are responsible for leading a group of 7-15-year-old camper ‘demigoddesses’ on their weekly camp journey through the wild, magical world of mythology, and for developing them into heroines. Plato’s immersive storytelling weaves a mythology-inspired adventure throughout the camp week, culminating in an action-packed “Quest”. Counselors lead demigods on Quest within their parks, helping them to use critical thinking and problem-solving skills while interacting with monsters, gods, and mythic heroes.

Job Responsibilities:

Forge a Community of Heroes. Counselors mentor a group of 8-12 campers, while enthusiastically participating in all activities and managing camper behavior, and ensuring their safety. You’ll model confidence, curiosity, and leadership and encourage girls to be the change they want to see in the world.

Train your Demigoddesses. In charge of running games, classes, and electives like Circe’s lab, tye-dying, and combat training, Counselors take the lead in preparing their demigoddesses for the Quest ahead. They work off of time-tested lesson plans while building their own modifications to make each activity reflect the week’s storyline at camp. When it is time to go on Quest, Counselors guide their girls and remain as engaged in the storyline as their campers are.

Build the World. At camp, we are all demigods, which means we have godly parents and have been gifted with special talents. Counselors embrace their demigod selves, living in the mythic world of Daring Girls whether it be discussing the politics of nymph houses or fully engaging in a chance encounter with a goddess. Counselors will be fluent in each week’s storyline, and enthusiastically commit to its worldbuilding. Whether that means pretending to turn into a tree, like Daphne, or listening to the muses’ favorite song depends on where the week takes them. A story is only powerful for young Demigoddesses when it is wholeheartedly “believed” by their leaders.

Steel your Resolve. Daring Girls is an energetic all-outdoor environment that requires counselors and campers alike to embrace exciting new challenges. As Counselors are the first people our Demigoddesses look to in times of challenge and uncertainty, we are looking for courageous individuals excited by the discomfort in adventure, and who do not shy away from responsibility, even during a heat wave.

Embrace Girl-Power. While many all-girl environments are centered around service to others or ideals of beauty, at Daring Girls, we focus on self-love, personal growth, and girl power. We provide a safe place to land so that girls can take big risks and introduce them to a network of like-minded girls to befriend.

Grow as an Adventurer. Working with the camp director, counselors develop as compassionate mentors and teaching artists. We encourage counselors to grow as collaborative team-builders, effective communicators, adept problem-solvers, and agile creative-thinkers. Above all, we foster resilience in our Counselors, and prioritize on the ability to graciously handle the challenges and triumphs of Camp.

Underworld Procedures. Counselors help maintain the daily operations of camp, whether it's helping with camp set-up/break-down, talking with parents during camper drop-off/pick-up, or maintaining safety procedures.

The Hours.

  • Approx 4-6 hours of self-paced Training
  • Attend a 30-40 hour In-Person Training week, the week before each program’s start date
  • 35-40 hours/week in-person at your camp location (our programs run between 4-9 weeks)
  • Monday-Friday; 7:45am-4:15pm with a ½ hour lunch break (Campers present 8:45-4:10)
