Job Title: Coordinator of Student Tutoring

Location: Morristown, TN (Employees are assigned to a “home” location but may occasionally or regularly be required to work at other WSCC locations.)

Job Purpose: The purpose of this position is to oversee and assure the academic needs of the students are met on each campus. Provides leadership, vision, and integrity by working closely with the Learning Lab Technicians, temporary part-time tutors, and student workers. The Coordinator implements the processes of hiring, training, supervising, and evaluating the work of student tutors in the Office of Student Tutoring. The Coordinator also works closely with the faculty and Assistant Vice President for Student Services to seek and utilize effective ways to integrate the operations of student tutoring with other academic and student support services of the college.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Supervises technicians and tutors, hires and trains new student tutors and part-time tutors. Sets tutor schedules and assigns appropriate tutors to tutees.
  • Tutors students individually and proficiently in one or more subjects in person and online. Conducts informal intakes of students to determine areas of student need. Assists students with eLEARN, Senators Mail, and basic computer issues.
  • Manages budget expenditures effectively.
  • Develops and coordinates activities that promote and publicize tutoring services.
  • Maintains timesheets, collects and compiles data regarding lab usage on all campuses, and documents the results for institutional use.
  • Accommodates students with Educational Support Plans by administering and proctoring exams.
  • Coordinate with instructors and Retention Services to follow-through with faculty feedback.
  • Coordinates online tutoring through the Bookings system and Microsoft Teams.
  • Consults with faculty and financial aid in order to locate and recruit students who may have the ability to provide services as a tutor for other students.
  • May perform other duties as assigned.

Leadership & Supervisory: The candidate is responsible for directing and monitoring the work of two Learning Lab technicians and thirty-five to forty students or temporary workers located on four campuses. The position operates under policy direction with only general direction from a supervisor. Recommends goals for a functional area. Work is reviewed on intermediate to long-term completion of objectives, not necessarily on the procedures used to accomplish the objectives.

Qualifying Standards:

Required

  • At least a Master’s degree in Education or a related academic field
  • At least 10 years of career experience in teaching/tutoring or a highly related field
  • Ability to use applicable software, including Microsoft Word, Outlook, and Excel

Preferred

  • Work background with a focus on strong interpersonal skills
  • Experience in a leadership role
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Teams and Bookings

Environment & Working Conditions: Working conditions in the office are clean and well-lit; limited interruptions and moderate but constant noise level.

Physical Demands: (including requirements for travel or working nights/weekends/holidays)

  • Requires extended periods of time working on computer staring at monitor and using keyboard and mouse.
  • Utilizes telephone and email for regular communications.
