JOB DESCRIPTION
The essential function of the position within the organization is to provide professional leadership, consultation and support of the District's math education programming. The position is responsible for supporting teachers and administrators in meeting identified goals in math education programs, assisting schools in obtaining necessary classroom materials and other resources, assisting in the development and implementation of special programs and services as assigned, and performing related professional and administrative duties as required. The position develops and implements programs within organizational policies; reports major activities to the Executive Director of Teaching and Learning through conferences and reports under the direction of the Supervisor of Math.

EDUCATION TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE
Education
  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with specialization in the areas of math, curriculum and instruction and/or administration/educational leadership;
  • Master's degree preferred
Experience
  • 5 years outstanding teaching or related experience in Math education preferred.
  • Administrative or supervisory experience desirable.
Certification
  • RI Teacher License in Math or Math Specialist/Consultant Certificate
  • Building Level Administrator or Curriculum and Instruction preferred
  • ESL Preferred
DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES, RESPONSIBILITIES AND CURRICULAR LINKAGES

Works with the Supervisor of Math to
  • Provide leadership for district-wide math programming inclusive of standards-based math practice curriculum development, resource selection, and staff development including summer and after school programs;
  • Coordinates proven, research-based methods, expertise in math strategies for curriculum reform; collects and analyzes data to improve products and services delivered to schools to support student achievement; provides leadership in designing and developing new programs and initiatives to meet identified needs.
  • Develop plans for the implementation of a multi-tiered professional learning program to ensure district teachers achieve a level of proficiency in or awareness of the knowledge and effective practices of math instruction through in-service workshops or visits teachers in schools to model lesson instruction;
  • Supports the Supervisor of Math in developing professional development, training and general oversight of the work of math coaches.
  • Plays a leadership role in the design and implementation of a multi-tiered system of supports (MTSS) and district-wide math assessments. Develop a formalized, age specific, intervention plan to address the math-related learning needs of students who are three (3) or more years behind grade level.
  • Attends and participates in district, school level, and/or PLC meetings.
  • Shares effective instructional strategies with teachers Observes teachers in the classroom as scheduled and/or as requested by principals;
  • Provides testing support by providing teachers with standardized test preparation materials, analyzing test results, and conducting related meetings and workshops.
  • Monitors the use of supplemental instructional tools and reports quarterly progress to Supervisor of Math, Executive Director of Teaching and Learning.
  • Coordinate the design, support and implementation of quality professional development programs in Math instruction, assessment and intervention for principals, coaches, teachers, and support staff consistent with district, state required and national standards for professional development;
  • Develop a program of professional learning in the knowledge and practices in math instruction specifically for Teaching Assistants and Instructional Assistants.
  • Monitor the quality of implementation of the math programs and initiatives in classrooms and extended learning.
  • Collaborate with the Office of Research to evaluate and recommend appropriate assessment to ensure timely screening, diagnosis and progress monitoring for students in development of the assessment calendar;
  • Provide quarterly updates on the progress of math achievement with CAO/ED of Teaching and Learning.
  • Participates in the selection and evaluation process for department staff; provides the necessary administrative and supervisory function for appropriate leadership of the department staff including math coaches; uses creative and critical thinking in curriculum work, staff management, and problem-solving;
  • Serves as district liaison to curriculum vendors, manage contracts with partners supporting the math initiatives in the district;
  • Assist in the development and management of budgets to support and maintain quality district programing;
  • Collaborate with Supervisors to identify and coordinate targeted school-based support to improve instruction with students of differing cognitive and language ability; with the Office of Special Education and the Office of Multi-Language Learners to design, coordinate, and implement innovative programs that support the needs of these student populations;
  • Ensure that District initiatives comply with state standards and federal guidelines;
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS STANDARDS
  • Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college or university in math related studies AND five (5) or more years of successful classroom experience OR Master's Degree in math related studies or school leadership.
  • Experience in test development, curriculum development, and grant writing desirable.
  • Experience using instructional technology to support teaching and learning, curriculum development, staff training, and program and student accountability.
  • Significant K-12 urban leadership experience in assessing program needs, curriculum development, program implementation and staff training; or other combinations of applicable education, training and experience which provides the knowledge, abilities and skills necessary to perform effectively in the position may be considered.
  • Knowledge of research-based curriculum, instruction and assessment practices.
  • Outstanding organizational skills and high attention to detail; outstanding written and oral communication skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities, adapt to change quickly and meet deadlines.
  • Proactive problem solver who demonstrates initiative.
  • Strong work ethic coupled with an enthusiastic and passionate approach to one's work.
