Job description

The cook is responsible for preparing 2 meals and 1 snack for 45-65 children each day. The hours for this position are 6:00a.m.-12:00p.m. The meals are to be prepared in accordance with the Child and Adult Food Program guidelines. The Cook is responsible for preparing and serving attractive, nutritionally balanced meals for the children. This position is responsible for maintaining high standards of quality food production and portion control using standard recipes and also for appropriate quantities of food needed to meet menu requirements. The cook ensures that food is stored and handled properly, and that the kitchen and all its equipment are thoroughly sanitary. Also, responsible for keeping logs to track cleaning duties, purchasing food and keeping records of those accounts.

Qualifications

Persons applying for the position of cook must be at least 18 years of age and in possession of a high school diploma or its equivalent. Candidate must have professional appearance and maintain a sanitary kitchen. Applicants should have at least one year of experience in meal planning and preparation, knowledge of early-childhood nutrition, and experience working with groups of children. Candidates are also required to undergo criminal background checks and TB skin tests, as well as pre-employment and random drug screens.

Abilities

Cooks must be able to work in a cooperative manner with other staff members, students, parents and funding agency personnel. They should be in possession of basic mathematical skills and must be able to accomplish accurate record-keeping. Further, cooks must be able to work safely around stoves and chemicals while having the physical endurance to spend many hours standing, walking and lifting heavy objects.
